Check out Episode 22 of the How to Homeschool in High School podcast! Excellent host Nadine Lauffer interviews Dr. Shormann to discuss teaching math in high school. Although you’ll want to listen to the entire podcast, our favorite part was at the end when Nadine shares how Shormann Math changed her thinking about math in a very positive way. Enjoy!

10 years in the making, it’s the film you didn’t know you were waiting for, about the volcano you never heard of! You can watch free on YouTube now! Search “Journey to Novarupta” and it should come up on Genesis Apologetics’ channel, with the same title image shown above. There is also an ad-free version on Vimeo. Super grateful for Dan Biddle and Genesis Apologetics for providing the final push to get this 10 year project finished, and to producer Pat Roy for your amazing perseverance and trust in Jesus and his Word! Watch it with your family and friends tonight. Enjoy! Here is some more background on the film: “The most powerful eruption of the 20th century. The explorer who led 4 expeditions in the early 1900’s. The book that told about their journeys into the hostile wilderness. And the modern-day creation scientist who rediscovered that book, and picked up where National Geographic left off. Powerful evidence for the worldwide flood, and Biblical history. It all comes together in one story of a volcano thirty times larger than Mount St. Helens!” YouTube: https://youtu.be/xdMNNdvkuQY Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/journeytonovarupta

Congrats to Grace, the first student to complete our new Shormann Calculus II course! Last week, Grace received word that she made an excellent score of 4 on the AP Calculus BC exam. Oh, and Grace is only 13 yrs old? Wow! Shormann Calculus II covers all topics on the AP’s Calculus BC exam. Topics like parametric equations, introduced in Lesson 91. Students can receive up to 8 college credits for passing this exam. Like all Shormann Math courses, Calculus II tells the story of math, like how radical Galileo’s discovery of parametric equations was. But, we are even more radical than that, as we continue to reveal the faith-based nature of mathematics, directing students towards Christ and a Hebrews 11:1 “reasonable faith” in His word and His works. For math and science All Stars like Galileo, Euler and Newton, a reasonable faith was normal and natural. In today’s secular educational world, such ideas are radical. We are beyond thankful for students like Grace (and their families) who trust us with their math education! Thank you, and to God be the glory!

We received an amazing testimony today and wanted to share it with you! We stand by our courses, and here's one of many thousands of reasons why:

"Our daughter homeschooled High School through Seton. Her subjects, which she loved included DIVE into Math/Physics etc. When time came for her to apply to University here in Canada, which was probably about 13 1/2 years ago; McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario said she was accepted into a Humanities program (which she did not apply to) but was not eligible for a Science based program (Bio-Chemistry) because they said her DIVE programs were not sufficient to be accepted as credits at McMaster. Her desire was to be a Doctor; therefore, she needed a Science based program.
The day before the deadline to accept the Humanities course (which she was not going to accept,) I tried to appeal to the Registrar who refused to listen to my appeals. I decided to write to Dr. Shormann at midnight, regarding our dilemma. He wrote back to me at about 3am our time. He wrote an awesome letter indicating that he was willing to talk to the registrar’s office with regards to this situation. His letter defended the fact that the DIVE programs were at least equal to our Canadian Curriculum. As soon as I saw his quick response I forwarded it to the Registrar. The Registrar responded immediately by giving our daughter 4 hours to go to the University to accept a position in the Bio-Chemistry program. We quickly complied and she spent 4 years at McMaster receiving her degree, then went to Medical School in Ireland, next she completed her 5 year Surgical Residency in USA and is now a licensed General Surgeon here in Canada. She is currently completing a Fellowship in Thoracic Surgery. I thank Dr. Shormann for his care and generosity to us. I believe he was an answer to my prayers and without him the road would have been much different. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank him and ask Almighty God to bless him and his family.
P.S. Not sure if he recalls this, but I hope he does."

A testimony we received recently:

"I just wanted to let you know that after completing your precalculus CLEP course, H and S both took the precalculus CLEP test on Friday September 23rd and scored well, 74 and 75! We are very pleased and grateful!"

These students completed Dr. Shormann's live online Precalculus course in May, then used our CLEP Professor Precalculus course to prepare for the CLEP Exam. Maximum grade on the CLEP is an 80, and 50 is considered passing. In other words, H and S absolutely crushed this exam. Great job using the course for what it was intended for!

Coming soon, a new film about the biggest volcanic eruption since 1912! In conjunction with Creation Quest and Genesis Apologetics, the film is based off the Journey to Novarupta audio adventure made several years ago. The Journey to Novarupta film follows Dr. Shormann and an adventurous team as they explore the site of the 1912 eruption in Alaska and find loads of evidence affirming biblical history. Please pray for Pat Roy and the Creation Quest team as they enter final production stages. Pray this will be a film that gives glory to God, points people to Jesus, and teaches everyone some great and unsearchable things they did not know (Jeremiah 33:3)!

Calculus II launching soon! A continuation of Shormann Calculus I, Calculus II follows standard college-level second semester content, preparing students for the AP Calculus BC Exam. As with all our courses, Calculus II connects students with their world and their awesome Creator, helping students see the pattern and purpose He puts into everything. While it will be “under construction” for 2022-23, contact us if you want to hop onboard for preflight testing! NASA image of the Friendship 7 launch on Feb. 20, 1962, piloted by astronaut John Glenn. As depicted in the 2016 film, Hidden Figures, renowned NASA scientist Katherine Johnson may have used Euler’s Method to calculate launch trajectories of this and other missions. We cover Euler’s Method in Lesson 105! 🚀

Prealgebra courses teach algebra fundamentals, so shouldn’t precalculus courses teach calculus fundamentals? We think so! Strangely, the vast majority of precalculus courses teach nothing about calculus, leaving students poorly prepared for calculus. Shormann Precalculus is different, and provides a solid background in calculus basics. Recently, Samuel D sent us a testimony of how Shormann Precalculus helped him: “[In my college] Calculus, I find myself much more prepared and equipped for the topics being taught to me, than many other people I know are.” Samuel concluded by thanking us for “teaching your courses the way you did, for making God and our faith a central part of it, and for always taking the time to lend me a hand when I needed one.” You can learn more about Shormann Precalculus and our other courses at diveintomath.com! 🙌🏻 🤓♾

Using a juicer to explain new math concepts? Well, sure! In Shormann Prealgebra(under construction), we use a juicer to introduce the concept of functions. Functions are like machines, having an input and an output. In this example, the input is an orange, and the output is delicious juice! Our number one goal with Shormann Math is to use math to connect students to their world and their Creator, and praise Him for the wonderfully delicious things He does for us.

Apparently, even guinea pigs appreciate our lectures! Or, at least the audio. We recently received a comment from a user, who, referring to Dr. Shormann’s voice said “your voice is so soothing, that the only time our guinea pigs come out from hiding is when your lectures are playing.” So, if you have skittish guinea pigs, you might want to consider DIVE! 😂😂😂

With all the crazy stuff happening in the world right now, here's some GOOD NEWS! This student completed 4 years of high school math using our courses. For privacy, the student's personal information is removed. Note in particular that this student went from asking questions about Roman numerals (something they should have learned by that point) to receiving not one, but THREE full scholarship offers to pursue a STEM-based degree! That doesn't happen by whining and complaining your way through high school, that's for sure. This student's emails were always kind, thoughtful, filled with gratitude and a determination to understand. I've always said that you can give a student the very best curriculum and teachers, but that's just 1% of learning. The other 99% of learning is up to the student, and it starts with an attitude of gratitude. Congrats also to this student's parents, y'all did an amazing job. Glory to God!

Dear Dr. Shormann,
Hello! Surprisingly, this is not correspondence related to my questions about something math-related. :) Rather, this is a letter to express a very heartfelt thank you.
I have been taking your math courses since 2017, and early last month, I completed Honors Shormann Calculus with an overall grade of 91%. I checked my email and one of the first emails that I sent you was about clarity involving a practice problem with Roman numerals. And from 2017 to 2020 you have been very helpful with answering my questions that arose while I was a participant in your math courses. I want to thank you for being consistently accessible and taking the time to provide direction to me with how to further understand mathematical concepts.
I also want to thank you for using your intellectual gifts to serve students across the country. I am so blessed to have had your curriculum for the tenure of my high school education. I greatly appreciate the way in which you teach math from a standpoint of blending everything together (e.g., not teaching a separate geometry course, but rather integrating it with Algebra 2 and Precalculus). I can say that your mathematics courses and the structure of your curriculum were a major part of my success in high school as well as in my on ramp experience into college mathematics courses. To provide a clearer understanding of what I mean, I would like to share with you some context 😉
Beginning in the summer following my sophomore year of high school, I began to prepare for the ACT and SAT and I was blessed to earn a 1250 on my initial SAT and a 28 on my initial ACT. A good portion of this was due to the amount of time that I spent preparing for these tests, but another significant portion of my great performance on my first administrations of these tests was due to the solid math education that I was receiving. I continued to prepare for the SAT and ACT and advance in your curriculum and in the year 2019 I was blessed to finish the SAT with a 1400 and the ACT with a 33. I also was blessed to be accepted into a few prestigious colleges. I was blessed to receive three full scholarships. Lord willing this fall, I will be attending one of these universities on a full academic scholarship, where I will be majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. My ultimate goal is to pursue an M.D./Ph.D. degree and ultimately focus on improving local community conditions and reducing the effects of educational and healthcare disparities. This summer as a part of my scholarship program, I am involved in a virtual summer bridge program in which I am taking Precalculus and Afro American Studies classes to give me a head start on my college education. I can truly say that without the preparation that I received in your math courses, I am not sure that I would understand as much of the information that is being presented in my current precalculus class or really understand the connection between geometry, trigonometry, and algebra. Also, THANK YOU for emphasizing that we memorize trigonometry identities and common cosine and sine values on a unit circle – after 3 years, it’s really embedded in my brain and it is saving me so much time in my precalculus class!
In conclusion, I wanted to say a deep, heartfelt, genuine, THANK YOU. Thank you for using the gifts that the Lord has given you to serve others and assist students across the country with understanding and mastering mathematics. I’m not sure how often you get to see or hear about the fruit of your labor, and so I wanted you to let you know that you have played an integral role (calculus pun intended) in my development as a student, and I am truly grateful.

“Mastery” is a word you hear a lot in homeschooling circles. But what about “faith?” What about simply believing God can make things from the tiniest of objects and the most minute instants of time? In Shormann Math and other DIVE courses, we encourage students to memorize fundamentals, but we also encourage them to just believe.
