"Hatred"

In the heart of the city where shadows tread,
Jealousy wears a mask of hate, black and red.
It's not hatred that their hearts bear,
But a burning wish to be you, hidden there.

They saw you rising, shining bright,
Believed without them, you'd lose your light.
Thought they were your world, your only sky,
But they were just a speck, a whisper, a sigh.

They hoped for your fall, for your dreams to decay,
But the only failure was in trusting their way.
They wanted to see you broken and bent,
Yet it was their weakness, their malcontent.

Their hate, a veil for the envy inside,
For your strength, your spirit, they couldn't hide.
They tried to dim your power, to make you feel small,
What fools, not seeing, you're the strongest of all.

Jealousy in disguise, hate's cruel façade,
They couldn't stand that you were so broad.
In the mirror of envy, they see their flaws,
And curse your name with fabricated laws.

But you rise, unbroken, in the city's hum,
Their masks slipping, revealing where they're from.
Hatred's just the echo of dreams untrue,
For in their hearts, they wish they were you.

“Things do change. The only question is that since things are deteriorating so quickly, will society and man’s habits change quickly enough?”

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”

H.L. Mencken, who wrote in The American Mercury for April 1924
that the aim of public education is not.. to fill the young of the species with knowledge and awaken
their intelligence .... Nothing could be further from the truth.
The aim ... is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible
to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized
citizenry, to put down dissent and originality. That is its aim
in the United States ... and that is its aim everywhere else.

After over 100 years of mandatory schooling in the U.S., literacy rates have dropped, families are fragmented, learning "disabilities" are skyrocketing, and children and youth are increasingly disaffected. Thirty years of teaching in the public school system led John Taylor Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory governmental schooling is to blame, accomplishing little but to teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine.

He became a fierce advocate of families and young people taking back education and learning, arguing that "genius is as common as dirt," but that conventional schooling is driving out the natural curiosity and problem-solving skills we're born with, replacing it with rule-following, fragmented time, and disillusionment.

Gatto's radical treatise on public education, a bestseller for 25 years, continues to bang the drum for an unshackling of children and learning from formal schooling. Now, in an ever-more-rapidly changing world with an explosion of alternative routes to learning, it's poised to continue to shake the world of institutional education for many more years.

Featuring a new foreword from Zachary Slayback, an Ivy League dropout and cofounder of tech start-up career foundry Praxis, this 25th anniversary edition will inspire new generations of parents and students to take control of learning and kickstart an empowered society of self-directed lifetime-learners.After over 100 years of mandatory schooling in the U.S., literacy rates have dropped, families are fragmented, learning "disabilities" are skyrocketing, and children and youth are increasingly disaffected.
