On July 23, 2024, Tanker-138 delivered its Millionth Gallon from the Medford Airtanker and VLAT (Very Large Airtanker) Base! This date is the second- earliest the million-gallon mark has been reached in the history of the program in Medford. The earliest millionth gallon date was on July 21st of 2018. The millionth gallon is a bench mark for any base in the nation, indicating just how busy we are supporting our collective wildland firefighting efforts.

We thank everyone who supports the national airtanker program:

From the dispatchers who help fill orders and track pilot flight activity, to the pilots and crews that work endlessly to keep their aircraft operational, to the aircraft fueling partners who work quickly to get the aircraft back in the air, all in an effort to keep communities safe from the threat of wildland fires.

We also appreciate the people who take time from their regular jobs and lives to work at the Medford and VLAT airtanker bases, as we are all part of the team.

Without the commitment of all of these people, we could not safely and effectively do what we do!

Wildfires are unpredictable and can quickly send smoke into Oregon communities. Smoke can travel hundreds of miles and can cause health problems during prolonged exposure.

Here's how you can protect yourself and your family when smoke levels are high:
• Stay inside if possible. Keep windows and doors closed.
• Avoid strenuous outdoor activity.
• Use HEPA filters in indoor ventilation systems or portable air purifiers.
• Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated reduces the smoke that can travel deep into your lungs.
• Wildfires and pollution contain small particles that can make asthma worse. If you can, create a cleaner air space. Make sure you have enough medication and monitor your health. Call your health care provider or 211 if your asthma gets worse or you’re exposed to smoke.

A red flag warning is issued when we identify weather conditions that promote rapid spread of fire which may become life-threatening. Strong winds combined with critically low relative humidity can lead to the rapid growth and spread of new and existing fires between 1 pm and 9 pm today.

We're chippin' away at our summer to-do list, and that means travelers should expect daytime lane closures and delays along OR 66 east of this week due to a chip seal project.

Work begins on Thursday, July 25, and will continue for about two days. Flaggers and pilot cars will provide traffic control through the work zone, which starts at MP 2 and ends at MP 8, near the east end of . Crews will be in the area completing prep work ahead of the chip seal.

Chip seal projects can result in loose rock in the roadway. We strongly recommend you slow down, drive with caution and allow additional space between vehicles. Impatient drivers may end up with project "souvenirs" that chip away at your paint job. Take care and save your car's exterior by continuing to use extra caution in the chip seal area for the following week after application.

While lane closures are in effect, we're asking local residents to wait at the end of their driveways for a pilot car before turning onto the highway. We're posting signs at each driveway, and flaggers will provide traffic control at local intersections.

Once chip sealing is complete, work will continue through mid-August, so be alert for intermittent daytime lane closures while crews wrap up with striping and sign installation.
