BREAKING: Donald Trump was whisked off the stage at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania after apparent gunshots rang through the crowd.

The former president and presumptive Republican nominee was showing off a chart of border crossing numbers during his last rally before the Republican National Convention opens Monday when bangs started ringing through the crowd. Trump could be seen reaching with his right hand toward his neck. There appeared to be blood on his face.

'I fought a lot of them, but the hardest hitter was a guy I met right at the end of my career: George Foreman. He was just a powerful, powerful man. He wasn’t too fast but his hands were so heavy – and he was extremely accurate with his combinations that night. But I wasn’t a young kid when I fought Foreman, I was at the end of my career by then.'

The iconic ‘Raging Bull’ Jake LaMotta, who brawled his way to the world middleweight title in a life of unbridled rage – within the ring and outside it – that became the subject of an acclaimed Martin Scorcese film was born Giacobbe LaMotta on the Lower East Side of Manhattan (yesterday) in 1922, one of five children.

He recalled that his father, a Sicilian immigrant who peddled fruits and vegetables, frequently beat his wife, a daughter of Italian immigrants, and their children.

The family moved to Philadelphia and then to the Bronx, where they lived in a rat-infested tenement. LaMotta attacked bullying schoolmates with an ice pick, and he beat a neighbourhood bookie into unconsciousness with a lead pipe while robbing him.

A “good-for-nothing bum kid” with a terrible temper, as he later described himself, LaMotta learned to box in an upstate New York reformatory, where he had been sent for attempted burglary. Having gone undefeated as an amateur after his release, he turned pro in 1941 and unleashed his enmity on dozens of ring opponents.

He best summed up his style in his memoir, “charge out of the corner, punch, punch, punch, never give up, take all the punishment the other guy could hand out but stay in there, slug and slug and slug.”

In a masterful display, Harlem's Sugar Ray Robinson retained his world welterweight title by outpointing Cuba's rugged Kid Gavilan over 15 rounds at the Municipal Stadium in Philadelphia in 1949.

It was Robinson's fourth defence of the crown he won from Tommy Bell in 1946.

"I was in the best shape of my career for this fight," said Robinson. "I never tired and he never hurt me. I don't know if I will fight anymore at welterweight. If I can get a crack at the middleweight crown, I'll give up the 147-pound title."

Robinson also outpointed the Cuban over 10 rounds in 1948.

Gavilan said: "He hit me hard several times, but I was surprised at the decision and would like to make one more fight with him."

The seventh and final fight of world middleweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson's European tour ended in disaster after he was outpointed by 23-year-old Randolph Turpin at Earls Court Arena in 1951 in a huge upset.

Turpin, who had never been past eight rounds going into the fight, handed Robinson only his second defeat when he had his hand raised after 15 tough rounds.

“I thought I was winning all the way. He never hurt me once,” said the new champion after the fight.

The gracious Robinson responded: “You were real good. Just like they said you were. I have no alibis. I was beaten by the better man.”

Jake LaMotta is most remembered for the six fierce fights with the great Sugar Ray Robinson.

In February 1943, he dealt Sugar Ray the first loss of his career in Robinson’s 41st fight, winning a 10-round decision after knocking him through the ropes. Robinson won their other five fights.

LaMotta’s toughness was in full display in his battles with Robinson. “I had him along the ropes,” Robinson remembered of their second clash. “He had his head down and I was really measuring him. His head popped up and he let go a left hook that almost tore through my stomach. It hurt so much, I had tears in my eyes, like a little kid. I got the decision, but I learned that Jake LaMotta was some animal.”

Tyson Fury on the Oleksandr Usyk rematch 🗣

“I've got to get him out of there because I'm not gonna get a decision. It's unfortunate because it's hard enough to win a fight just by winning it, never mind knowing you've gotta knock someone out. But I'm confident and looking forward to the challenge… I hear he's got a broken jaw and a broken eye socket, so get yourself well and I'll see you in December.”
