The recent comments made by the founder of Rolling Stone Magazine, where he claimed that Black artists "aren't articulate on that level," have sparked conversation about the ongoing challenges and biases faced by Black musicians in the music industry. These comments reflect the bass issue of racial prejudice within the music and media industry that has stifled Black artists' recognition/opportunities for far too long. the incident reminds me of how few Black musicians rarely appeared in the mag at all. When starting the magazine the founder said "It was a men’s magazine, though women read it; it was a white magazine, though African Americans were fetishised in it.” White men were the focus; women and Black people were secondary thoughts and objects of fascination rather than subjects in their own right." The impact of this situation is truly immeasurable. Consider all the incredible Black and female musicians whose artistic journeys may have been prematurely halted because Rolling Stone and numerous writers aligned with Wenner's perspectives failed to recognize their value. Reflect on the missed opportunities to document the stories of these talented Black musicians, as book editors erroneously believed that only white male artists were noteworthy. This narrow mindset perpetuated the idea that books about white male artists were the only ones marketable, assuming that the audience for music literature was the same as that of Rolling Stone. This one person's comments arent isolated, as a black man I wrestle with this every day, the reality of being marginalized or dismissed for my skin tone alone.
After casting aside my fear of being cast by colleagues as “the once cool Black guy posting a bunch of Black stuff all the time”, It is crucial to think deeply about the implications of such statements. When a prominent figure like the founder of Rolling Stone makes such remarks, it reinforces stereotypes that have historically marginalized Black artists. It perpetuates the false notion that talent/articulation are determined by one's race, rather than individual abilities and dedication to their craft.
The subsequent removal of the founder from the Board at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame seems “necessary” . It sends a clear message that such prejudiced views have no place in institutions that aim to celebrate and honor the contributions of musicians from all backgrounds.
However, it is worth noting that the founder may still maintain positions of influence in both Rolling Stone Magazine and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It’s like moving “racist uncle” to another part of the house during Thanksgiving as if we didn’t hear initially.
In contrast to inane comments, folks should accept that talent knows no color or ethnicity. As musician Eric Clapton once humbly stated when asked what it felt like to be the best guitarist in the world, "I don't know, you would have to ask Prince." Wenner’s comments imply that he never actually listened to Biggie.
In the introduction of his new book 'The Masters,' the businessman claimed Black and women artists aren't in his "zeitgeist."
