Humphreys County Students, Parents, Community, and Staff:

As you know, the community meeting to share information about the transition of the Humphreys County School District to "District of Transformation" status will be held on Thursday, January 23rd @ 5:30 p.m. Due to an issue with the boiler in the performing arts center, the meeting has been moved to the seminar hall in Humphreys County High School. Also, there will be a basketball game at the high school that will begin at 6:30 p.m. This is a "rescheduled" home game with Amanda Elzy. This is unavoidable, unfortunately, and we appreciate your understanding. We will begin the community meeting in the seminar hall at 5:30 p.m., and you can attend the basketball game in the gym at 6:30 p.m. Thanks, in advance, for your support!

With frigid temperatures moving in, remember these tips for dripping your water faucets!

Why?? Because a slight but steady stream of water through faucets during prolonged cold spells can help prevent pipes from freezing.

💧How much water do I run? You need just a trickle of water to drip so that water is moving through the pipes consistently.

💧How long do I run the water? Let the hot and cold faucet drip until temperatures are consistently above freezing to be on the safe side.

💧Isn’t it expensive to let the faucet drip? At the rate the water is dripping, it will fill a gallon pitcher in about an hour. At current rates, this will cost about 2 cents per night to drip one faucet. Much cheaper than broken pipes and water damage!

💧Which faucet/s should I drip? If you know the farthest faucet from your water meter, you can run only that faucet and it will draw water all the way through the house.

💧Can’t I just open the cabinet doors? Opening the cabinets to allow warm air into those enclosed spaces can help, but most pipe problems happen in places that are not as accessible. Uninsulated pipes in uninsulated spaces, especially garages, crawl spaces, and attics, are usually the places more likely to have problems with freezing.

FIRE AND ICE: PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM SEVERE COLD WEATHER THREATS
JACKSON, Miss. – Severe cold weather poses a threat to your home and vehicle. Avoid an insurance claim by taking action now.
• Leave your faucet running with a slight drip and open the cabinet doors under your sinks.
• Look at the trees around your property and cut back branches or stems that are dead, dying, diseased, or broken.
• Clearing the debris from your gutters will help prevent ice dams by allowing meltwater to drain freely.
• Evaluate the insulation and ventilation (roof or soffit vents) in your attic, keeping the warm air in your home and out of your attic.
• Perform maintenance checks on your vehicle. Check the battery, antifreeze and wiper fluid levels. Fill up with gas, pack emergency supplies and keep a windshield scraper on-hand to remove ice.
As you heat your home, keep fire safety in mind.
• Keep clothes, drapes, and anything else combustible at least 3 feet away from all heating equipment, especially space heaters.
• Never leave space heaters on when you are away from home.
• Never plug space heaters into extension cords. Plug electric space heaters directly into an outlet.
• All heating equipment should be UL® approved.
• Inspect the space heater’s power cord for damage, fraying or heat. If the cord inspection reveals any of these issues, the heater should be replaced.
• Never use space heaters while you sleep or in areas where children may be without adult supervision.
• Always unplug space heaters when they are not in use. The heater should also be equipped with a tip over shut-off switch.
• Never use a stove or oven to heat living spaces.
• If using a gas heater, install a carbon monoxide detector.
• Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
• Smoke alarms should be placed in every sleeping area and common hallways and on every level of the home.
• Make sure everyone in your home knows how to get out and where to meet outside.
• Once everyone is outside a burning home, call 911 and don’t go back inside the home under any circumstances.

Mabel Louise Trantham Reed (Lou), age 92, passed away peacefully in Gulfport, Mississippi, on December 31, 2024. She was born to Florence and Milton on January 13, 1932, in Belzoni, Mississippi. She attended Belzoni High School where she was a majorette. Afterwards, she went to Ole Miss where she met the love of her life, Jack Reed. In 1951, she married Jack, who could handle her strong-willed nature with equal parts patience and charm. Their 67-year marriage was a testament to partnership, humor, and love, taking them from the bright lights of New York and New Jersey (while Jack played for the Yankees) to the warmth of Mississippi, where they raised four children and created a lifetime of memories.
Lou and Jack never missed an opportunity to fellowship with friends and family. Whether hosting porch parties at their home or other family member’s homes in Silver City, attending Ole Miss football games, hitting the golf course, or savoring a glass of wine at happy hour, they made connecting with others a cornerstone of their life.
Lou made staying active and polished an art form. She never missed the gym well into her later years—or a hair appointment, for that matter. Lou didn’t believe in leaving the house, or letting others leave the house, looking anything less than their best (that included lipstick)—and it was always for their own good!
She spent her last years at Indywood in Indianola, Mississippi, followed by Summerfield Senior Living in Gulfport, Mississippi. During her time at Indywood, she formed a deep personal connection with Ms. Frances Reid, and at Summerfield, she bonded closely with Ms Johnnie Sue Gaddis. Both friendships ensured her lively spirit never dimmed.
Lou was equal parts direct and endearing, always holding herself and others to high standards. Without a doubt she proved that discipline and dedication were among her superpowers. Her faith and family served as her compass throughout her remarkable life. A devoted member of Silver City Methodist Church, Lou’s enduring legacy will continue to shine in the hearts of her loved ones.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Florence and Milton Trantham, and her beloved husband, Jack. She leaves behind a family who will forever admire her tenacity, humor, and impeccable hair, as well as countless friends who will always toast her memory with a smile (and perhaps a glass of wine).
She is survived by children John Burwell Reed, Jr. (Deidre) of Houston, TX, G*i Reed Millwood (Johnny) of Petal, Ms., Roy Anne Reed Beckham (Don) of Houston, TX and Swayze Reed Collier (Robert) of Biloxi, MS, as well as grandchildren Swayze Reed White (Cade) of Houston, TX, Drew Millwood (Katie) of Dumas, MS., Dustin Millwood (Shannon) of Petal, MS., Reed Millwood of Panama City, FL, Alex Beckham of Houston, TX, Sydney Beckham of Austin, TX, Madison Collier Grace(Owen) of Brandon, MS., Margaret Goodwyn Bankston of Oxford, MS., and Jake Collier of Biloxi, Ms. She is also survived by great grandchildren Hallie White, Eloise White, Johnny Millwood, Beau Millwood, Lydia Millwood, Skylar Millwood, Avery Grace, Smith Grace, and Daniel Bankston and her beloved nieces and nephews.
The Family would like to especially thank the people who helped with Lou’s care and who were all so very important in her life-her nephew Jim Reed, her nephew Hal Bridges and his wife Beth, her niece Hallie G*il Crook and her husband Noel, Kay Carver and Terrie Ann Williams-Frizell. In addition, the Family would like to thank Sandy, Susan and Jamie at Summerfield Senior living and the staff at Gentiva Hospice for their kind and loving care.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 11th, at 11:00am at the Silver City Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Silver City Methodist Church, a place that brought Lou immense joy and purpose.

Ring in the New Year with sober driving
JACKSON, MISS. – 2025 is almost here, and the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is announcing its New Year’s resolution: No driving under the influence.

“Celebrating the New Year should be a joyous time with friends and family, but all too often, it can turn tragic when someone decides to drink and drive,” said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. “Prioritize the safety of yourself and others by never driving impaired. Always have a plan for a safe and sober ride home.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 13,524 people were killed in an alcohol-impaired driving crash in 2022, which is one-third of all driving fatalities. Drunk driving deaths are preventable.

To enjoy a safe and responsible holiday, MDOT recommends the following tips:
• Plan ahead and designate a sober driver before the party starts.
• If you are impaired, call a taxi, transportation service, sober friend or family member.
• If you see someone who is about to drive under the influence, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get home.
• If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call law enforcement.
• Avoid all distractions and keep your eyes on the road. Pay attention to other drivers who may not be as safe as you.
• Buckle up. Wearing your seatbelt is a free, easy and effective way to save lives and reduce serious injuries in the event of a crash.

To keep motorists safe as we approach New Year’s Day 2025, MDOT has suspended all interstate and highway construction until Thursday, Jan. 2. This work suspension provides maximum travel capacity and minimal construction delays for holiday travelers. Drivers should be aware that some lane closures will remain in place to protect the traveling public, and they should be treated as an active work zone.

For more safety tips this holiday season, visit GoMDOT.com/drivesmartms.
