We had a private screening of “Senegalese Women: A Challenge to Strife” at the Senegalese Embassy. Preceded the showing with a lively musical program featuring Senegalese dancing and singing. The Ambassador spoke glowingly about the film and the whole subject of the women of Senegal. The day before AND the day after, the weather was really lousy, so we were very lucky. Numerous requests for other showings result at least in part from the fact that International Women’s Day coincided with these activities. As a result of this interest, we have decided to enter the film in various film festivals.

Santis Productions' latest film, "Senegalese Women: A Challenge to Strife", documents the great progress Senegal has made to counter extremist Islamic movements. Much of this progress is attributable to the peaceful nature of Islam in Senegal, which is dominated by the Sufi and Murid schools. But equally important is the powerful voice of women opposing violence and seeking to elevate their status as full participants in the national economy. While they strive to rid themselves of the discriminatory traditional restrictions, they are working hard to seek equality and prosperity.

Our Vietnam film made the big time in Vietnam. On April 30, their national independence day, it was broadcast worldwide, and nationally eight times, including prime time which required cancelling some regular programs. I wish we could find a way for similar distribution here, where we lament that we learned nothing from Vietnam, but we do nothing to alter that reality.
A film produced by Santis Productions in 2008. It reports on the reconciliation which has occurred between the US and Vietnam following the tragic war of thirty years ago. It reflects the horrors of that war and its poignant impact on those who fought it, or were victims of it. But its primary focus is on the healing which resulted from heartfelt efforts by combat veterans to close personal circles and to meet those whom they fought so many years ago. The bonding was accelerated by commercial and educational interests which saw an opportunity for the two countries to work together for the development of Vietnam. With the passage of time, more and more exiled Vietnamese have returned to visit their homeland, further hastening the lowering of barriers between the two countries.
