Live long and prosper! Such a pleasure to interview the amazing George Takei. You may know him as Sulu in Star Trek (a name partly inspired by the Philippines he told me) but he also was forced to live in Japanese internment camps when he was a child. Tune in to Sunrise Weekends to find out why he’s in Honolulu and how you can see him in person.

Security experts say deterrence has helped maintain peace on the Korean peninsula and keep North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un in check.

U.S. and South Korea are celebrating 70 years of its strategic defense alliance, and are flexing it more now that Kim is ramping up his missile capabilities.

Thank you to those who lobbied the Philippine Consulate to allow me to attend the Marcos events in Honolulu as a long-time Filipino community advocate. In the end, I was told I could not attend because I am a journalist.

That doesn't keep me from doing my job though:

More than 30 years after he and his family lived in exile here, Marcos returned to Honolulu for a two-day visit and was met with the fanfare of a concert and election rally with about 1,000 Filipino community leaders. But not everyone welcomed him with open arms.

Enjoyed free street parking for about 8 months. Now that the City of Honolulu replaced all its old credit card parking meters with new technology, there's no excuse. You can pay with your smartphone, credit card or coins.

Soon, you'll be able to find open metered parking spots on an app. And HPD will be able to see if cars are parked with expired meters -- remotely.

Hawaii News Now is in South Korea!

Sharing snaps from Day 1 of filming in Seoul for a series on . First stop: tour of Cheong Wa Dae, known as the “Blue House,” a sprawling complex that served as the administrative headquarters and residence of South Korea’s president for 74 years. Think White House but way bigger and built on a mountain.

Last year, President Yoon Suk Yeol moved his administration to another location so now the public can tour the buildings and grounds.

Much love to Chef Joey Macadangdang and the team at Joey's Kitchen and Macadangdang for cooking 1,500+ meals a day for 18 days and feeding displaced Maui residents:

Chef Joey Macadangdang said in the dark, without power, he and his team found purpose. They still had gas so they cooked for those who couldn’t, and the generous donations began pouring in.

If you’re wondering why I’m not posting about the tragedy on Maui, it’s because I’m thousands of miles away on a family vacation. Have been following my HNN colleagues’ hard work and watching the coverage on international news outlets… praying for those who lost so much and the first responders and volunteers working hard on recovery.

It’s a reminder for how precious life is. I’m so grateful to have this time with my family to make lasting memories. We are in Rome, walking several miles each day, stopping to see the sights and enjoying delicious Italian food. The heat and crowds make us grumpy at times but then we remind ourselves that this is all a gift.
