How to homeschool part 4:
Choosing your math curriculum!

In my opinion math is the most important subject to have a consistent curriculum for. We have tried a few different curriculums for math

-Singapore - unit based curriculum. I found it confusing to teach but I know several people who use it and like it.

-Saxon - tried and true spiral curriculum that has been around for many many years. Scripted lessons. Very comprehensive and well known. Easy to teach. My kids and I felt it was boring

- Good and the Beautiful - the curriculum we use currently. Also a spiral curriculum with scripted lessons. It is engaging and I find it to be the right amount of challenge for my kids.

-Kahn Academy (online)
-Math u See
-Abeka
-Horizons
-Christian light Education
-Masterbooks

Homeschool Philosophies

You can do some research to find out what kind of philosophy fits your family and your teaching style. Are you someone who wants more structure? Or does the idea of unschooling appeal to you?

You definitely don’t need to choose a philosophy, but it can help guide your curriculum choices!

We are eclectic homeschoolers meaning we mix and match depending on the subject! We have done a mix of traditional, unschooling, charlotte mason and unit studies.

It is super important to know the laws in your state related to homeschool! Look them up online or find a local homeschool group and ask questions! You may need to, File an intent to homeschool form, Track your school days, Submit regular reports, or you may not need to do anything!

There are a million reasons why you might be thinking about it but if you dont have a solid reason for doing it, you’re going to want to quit on the hard days! Have a reason that will sustain you through the tough days! Write it down so you can look at it down the road!

Living full time in a trailer isn’t all pretty views and fun adventures! Here’s a glimpse into the dirty work that goes on behind the scenes! Emptying our black water(toilet water) tanks is a weekly necessity. We empty the tank into the sewer and then flush it out.

If you are thinking of buying a trailer or RV definitely consider the tank emptying process! Newer trailers make it easier to empty the
tanks than older ones!

We have had multiple people ask about the baskets that we hang by the kids beds in our bunk room! They are perfect for storing all of their random items such as iPads, headphones, books, sunglasses, wallets, flashlights etc. They really help to declutter their space and keep the kids from losing their important things!

Yesterday we visited Mount Rushmore. It is really incredible to see it up close. They have a visitor center on site where you can learn all about how they carved the mountain. Did you know 90% of the mountain was carved using dynamite? Crazy. It’s also crazy that no one died during the project seeing as how they were hanging off a mountain with crude harnesses using jackhammers and dynamite.It was super cool to learn about the history of this iconic national monument! Indiana Dunes National Park was a completely unexpected and wonderful surprise! We weren’t ever planning on going but ended up here on the way to Michigan. We made a pit stop to a tiny little town in Illinois called Nauvoo. It is a town with great significance to the history of our church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) and it is also just a really fun restored 1800s town. They restored a lot of the original buildings from the old town including the blacksmith shop, gunsmith, tinsmith, drugstore, and shoe maker. They had a family activity room where the kids got to learn how to weave, make candles, rope, barrels, bread, and bricks. We got to “pack” a wagon for the trek west, ride on a carriage, play kids games, and watch tons of fun performances. It was such a fun week! Some people call it taking a risk, I call it acting in faith. Sometimes God has a bigger plan for us than we have for ourselves.
