The Anhinga, sometimes referred to as the water turkey (for its turkey-like tail) or snake bird (for its more distinctive feature: its long, serpentine neck), is a bird adapted for swimming underwater; however, it has to dry its wings afterwards in order to fly. You can often spot them sunbathing on the banks of the water or on low hanging branches, drying off after a swim to catch its dinner.

How to thrive as an SOB (spouse of a birder)

What should you do when on a scale from 1-10, your interest in birds is a 3 but your spouse’s is a 9? Do you just avoid going birding with them but in doing so, potentially miss out on spending quality time together? Or do you tag along but remain bored out of your mind because you have no interest in whether that oriole was a Scott’s, Bullock or hooded?

Well, we’ve got some useful tips and tricks to help navigate the important role of being an SOB! Read more in our May Issue or online at TPWMagazine.com.

Hi, sorry to bother you. We’re looking for a salamander. It seems to be lost. Have you seen it?
Oh, you need a description? Um, pale, eyeless, possibly a cannibalistic amphibian.
Where was it last seen? In the cold, dark waters of an aquifer deep beneath the Hill Country like 10 years ago.

Scientists have been searching and hoping to find it. Read more about the Blanco blind salamander in our June issue or online at TPWMagazine.com!

All’s fair in love and turtles… 🐢

World Turtle Day is an annual observance held to celebrate and encourage human action to help protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats.

Turtles are some of the oldest reptilian species on earth, dating all the way back to the dinosaurs! Texas is home to 1 native tortoise (the Texas Tortoise), 1 native terrapin (Diamondback Terrapin) and 28 species of turtles (like the red-eared slider, Texas river cooter, and ornate box turtle, to name a few)—all worth shellebrating and protecting!

You might think a state park road is just that — a road, a means to get to where you want to go within the park boundary. But it’s so much more than that.

Park roads serve as a portal to a wild and wonderful world and so much thought and consideration goes into how these roads are constructed.

Today is National Endangered Species day!

Texas is home to many endangered species, one being the Aplomado Falcon. These birds of prey nearly disappeared in Texas by the 1930s. As a result, the Chihuahuan Desert Institute in Alpine began a captive breeding program in 1977, later taken over and expanded by the nonprofit Peregrine Fund in the 1980s, to help restore the population.

From 1993-2013, 997 captive-bred falcons were released into the wild at various sites in Texas, including Mustang Island State Park — which has played a key role in the recovery of this species ever since.

Named “Mother Lagoon” by Spanish explorers, the Laguna Madre’s shallow and salty waters stretch more than 100 miles from Corpus Christi to the Rio Grande, making it the most unspoiled bay system in Texas.

Known for its vast seagrass meadows, huge bird population and bountiful fishing grounds, the Laguna Madre offers recreational bliss as well as conservation challenges.

Wow, what an incredible total eclipse!

Photographer Maegan here. The weather was not in my favor when it came time for 100% totality so I did miss directly seeing the moon completely block out the sun. I can’t be too upset at the clouds tho – they did make for some cool photos!

Nonetheless, it was such a cool experience watching everything around me go dark for a couple minutes. A once-in-lifetime-moment that I’m glad I was able to photograph!

Hope everyone had a safe and incredible eclipse viewing experience!

I'll admit it, I'm an overpacker. Going camping for one night? Might as well bring every single piece of equipment I own, even if not totally necessary.

Thankfully, writer and adventurer Pam LeBlanc breaks down why sometimes less is more when it comes to camping.

Did you know in parts of West Texas you can find an eight-legged arachnid with huge front pincers, a whip-like tail and can pray acid from its abdomen? That might sound like the description of a supervillain character, but it's actually just a harmless vinegaroon!

Also known as a whip scorpion, the vinegaroon hides in burrows under leaves, logs or rocks and produces a vinegar-like mist containing 85 percent acetic acid when disturbed, which, while harmless, will sting if it gets in your nose or eyes.

No boat? No problem!

On a chilly February morning, writer Kirk McDonnell set his sights on Purtis Creek State Park in hopes of catching a largemouth bass without a big boat. He shares some tips on how Texas anglers can find success fishing from the bank, piers or kayaks for one of the most sought after sportfish.

Our photographer Maegan joined Kirk out at the park to take photos for the story as well as do some fishing of her own and ended up being the first one to catch one of the big bass they were hoping for (Is there nothing she can't do??)

Bassmaster named O.H. Ivie as the top bass fishing lake in the nation for 2023, with 15 fish making up the vast majority of the 18 total Legacy Class Sharlunkers caught in Texas in 2023.

It's garnered the attention of anglers far and wide; people are flocking to Texas from across the nation and the world, hoping to land the catch of a lifetime.
