This week on Horror from the High Desert Podcast!. Scotty talks to author, editor, and publisher Aric Sundquist about growing up a “Yooper” in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and how his mother’s love of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, sparked his early interest in dark fiction. Aric discusses the influence of Koontz, King (especially his 1978 collection “Night Shift” and the subsequent 1985 anthology film adaptation “Cat’s Eye”), Lovecraft, and fantasy writers like Tolkien, Jordan, and Tad Williams on his work, and how Aric’s rediscovery of Ray Bradbury’s more macabre tales as an MFA candidate in Creative Writing informed his decision to move specifically into writing horror.

Aric also talks about the lessons he learned in his creative writing program, and how he applies them to his work as an editor and publisher at Dark Peninsula Press, the independent publishing company he founded in 2019. He and Scotty talk about the anthologies Dark Peninsula Press has produced (spoiler alert: Scotty’s stories have appeared in just about all of them), and Aric outlines his vision for the company’s future.

And, of course, they talk about Aric’s own writing, from his absurdist comic take on cosmic horror with his novella “Serious Applicants Only” (2021, Dark Peninsula Press) to his terrifying, Joyce Carol Oates-inspired short story “The Run” (2014, “Night Terrors III”).

This week on Horror from the High Desert Podcast! Scotty talks to author Robert P. Ottone about growing up on Long Island, his decision to leave his job as a copywriter and become a teacher while also pursuing a career as a writer, and the pushback he received writing horror while working toward an MFA in Children’s Literature. Robert also discusses the importance of writing as an outlet for grief, his early forays into publishing, and major influences from the brilliant John Langan to Nickelodeon’s “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”

Robert and Scotty also talk about how fears around both pregnancy and parenthood informed his acclaimed novel “The Vile Thing We Created” (2023, Hydra Publications), and Robert explains how a teenage in-joke between friends inspired his blood-spattered recent book “Curse of the Cob Man” (2023, Weird House Press).

On the latest Horror from the High Desert Podcast, Scotty talks to comic-book artist and writer Aaron Campbell about his early horror influences from Dungeons and Dragons, T.E.D. Klein, and H.P. Lovecraft, and the labyrinthine path through the early days of his career. They discuss “Infidel” (2018, Image Comics), Aaron’s acclaimed collaboration with writer Pornsak Pichetshote and colorist José Villarrubia, which was named one of NPR’s “100 Favorite Horror Stories of All Time” in 2018.

They spend time on Aaron’s current work with DC Comics in the “Hellblazer” and “Sandman” universe, and finish with a long conversation about Aaron’s writing debut with the Hammer-Horror influenced “West of Sundown” (Vault Comics), his collaboration with co-writer Tim Seeley and artist Jim Terry. Aaron talks about bridging the gap between disparate genres (gothic horror and the “Spaghetti Western”), and the importance of representing the truth of America’s southwestern colonial past, even in the context of genre fiction.

They also spend more than a few minutes breaking down the Hammer classic “The Brides of Dracula” (1960), discussing how its style influenced the aesthetic of “West of Sundown,” and Aaron rhapsodizes about his favorite piece of cinematic schlock: 1981’s “The Monster Club,” starring Vincent Price and John Carradine.

Scotty talks to author Larry Hinkle about his excellent new collection “The Space Between” (February 14, Trepidatio Publishing). They discuss how Larry’s mother helped him discover his early love of horror, but also how negative experiences in writing workshops pushed him out of fiction writing for nearly three decades. After Scotty cools down from his rant about bad teachers, they talk about the value of brevity in the horror story, balancing humor, horror, and poignancy in Larry’s work, time travel narratives, Lovecraft’s complicated legacy, how to turn a garbage dump into a living, peeing kaiju, and much more. So why is Scotty having a former segment director for Jimmy Kimmel Live! as a guest on Horror from the High Desert Podcast? Well, aside from being one of his oldest friends, Maureen Bharoocha is also the director of two Lifetime Network thrillers, along with the upcoming teen horror/comedy “The Prank” (March 15, from Iconic Events).

Scotty and Maureen talk about her upbringing in a mixed Catholic/Muslim household, their time in film school together as argumentative “natural contrarians,” Maureen’s uncanny ability to turn a job at an upscale Beverly Hills bakery into a legitimate filmmaking career, how making “women in peril” movies for Lifetime is sort of like the modern-day Roger Corman school of low-budget filmmaking, how she the thinks about the balance between horror and comedy, what it’s like giving notes to movie legends like Keith David and Rita Moreno, and a whole lot more. Maureen takes us on her very own unique journey through the entertainment industry.
