What is the reason for Daylight Saving Time?
Greetings, world. The Questioning Center is back with more information. Today is November 2nd, so it’s Daylight Saving Time! But what is the reason for this? You have probably heard about Benjamin Franklin creating Daylight Saving, yet that’s false. According to UShistory .org, “Franklin is often given credit for inventing Daylight Saving Time. He did write a satirical piece…in which he claims credit for discovering the fact that the sun begins shining from the moment it rises, something that the locals, who sleep till noon, would never have means of knowing. To save on wasteful candles, Franklin recommends taxing people who use shutters, and ringing bells every morning at sunup to force people to adjust their days according to the availability of sunlight.” So, Ben Franklin merely meant it as a joke. Yet, at this time of the year, the hours go back to “save” an hour of sunlight because of WWI. According to Spectrum News 1, “It was during World War I that daylight saving time was first practically used.
In 1916, locations within the German Empire set clocks ahead one hour to use less power for lighting and to save fuel for the war effort. Many other countries soon followed, and after the war ended, they all went back to standard time.” Now, for the United States, they also used it during a world war. “Daylight saving time was first used in 1918, when a bill introduced the idea of a seasonal time shift. It lasted seven months before the bill was repealed. During World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt reestablished the idea of daylight saving time. It was called "War Time. In 1966, the Uniform Time Act of 1966 established the idea of regulating a yearly time change. Daylight saving time would begin the last Sunday in April and end the last Sunday in October." Interesting how a concept was created out of 1 hour being removed at the year’s end and beginning of Samhain. It seems that this tradition is a double-edged sword for removing and adding an hour of sunlight changes everyone's minds, let alone clocks.
