The traditional art of charcuterie dates back to 15th century France, rooted in simple meals eaten by European laborers that consisted of meats, cheese, bread, and produce. Today, the board is adored for its flexibility, sociability, convenience and ease. Specialty ingredients can share the spotlight with grocery items. Even the most unskilled cook can create a masterpiece that tastes equally as impressive.

Ilysse Rimalovski shares grazing board insights– complete with local go-to retailers and ingredients guide, in our Summer issue, in homes now or at the link below:

Americans are making dinner at home four nights per week plus one or more times on the weekend, according to an April trends survey by TheKitchn. No wonder we are constantly in search of new recipes.

Local residents have found a fun and meaningful solve to this issue, pairing a plethora of cookbook recipes with engaging conversation and companionship in the form of the SOMA Cookbook Club.

Participating members (408 in total!) have cooked their way through 90 different cookbooks thus far, offering dishes and ideas from around the world. A small group (dependent on the host’s capacity) gathers each week for “tasting Sundays” where they share not only the bounty of delectable eats, but ideas and opinions about the spotlighted cookbook.

If you regularly find yourself asking, “What should I make for dinner?” this is the club for you!

You can find the group on Facebook, and be sure to read the full story (recipe included!) in our Summer issue, in homes now or at the link below:

Mark your calendars and come support South Orange’s very own Bob Ziegler when he and his band and his band Skyfoctor hit the Maplewoodstock stage Sunday, July 14 at 3pm. Though this is the band’s first appearance at Maplewoodstock, Bob is no stranger to the renowned local music and art festival. To date, Skyfactor has played all of the festivals in the New York metro area and most of the clubs in NYC. Touching on many different genres - rock, pop, soul, blues, and even country - this “family” just really enjoys creating music together and are super excited for their Maplewoodstock debut.

We asked local realtors what they would do if they had a year to follow a dream. No work, no money worries – just the chance to live out a fantasy.

What would Anne Servitto do with a gap year?

She would sing and ski. She shares:
When I was embarking on my musical theater career I flirted with the idea of being a singing waiter at The Crystal Palace in Aspen, Colorado and teaching tiny tots to ski. I always wondered what my life would’ve been like had I made the move. With a year to do as I please, I’d love to find out. I’d move to a ski town out west – Vail, Copper Mountain, or Aspen – and live out that dream of doing the two things that I love: singing and teaching 3- to 6-year olds to ski.

What would Douglas Huebner do with a gap year?

He would design and dine in the French countryside. He shares:
One of the most rewarding parts of my design and real estate practice is uncovering the best in a home, either to bring it to market or for the homeowner to enjoy. My dream is to work for master interior designer Timothy Corrigan, renowned for his restorations of French chateaux. I’d spend my days working among the best craftsmen and evenings exploring the culinary delights of the surrounding towns.

What would Robert Northfield do with a gap year?

He would relax with his family. He shares:
I spent a lot of time building my career during the children’s early years. They’re adults now so I’d use my year to reconnect with them. Since we’re moving to a home in South Orange to better suit our family of four adults, I’d spend time cooking family meals in our new kitchen and working out together in our home gym. And with a lower maintenance lifestyle we’d have more time to travel the world. We might even take a family road trip to see the U.S. in a high-performance car.

What would Victoria Carter do with a gap year?

She would travel the world. She shares:
Even though I’ve traveled so extensively, there are still so many places I’d like to visit. I’d zero in on continents I’ve never been to – Africa, Asia, Australia and South America – and spend enough time in each one to get to know the culture, people, and lifestyle. It’d be a combination of sightseeing and hanging out like a local. Having my husband and sons going me would make it that much sweeter.

What would Dennis Hepworth do with a gap year?

He would practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He shares:
Anyone who knows me understands my passion for weightlifting. Lately though, I’ve been pursuing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. If I had more time, I would take classes six days a week rather than three. It calms me down, keeps me in great shape and readies me to handle day-to-day challenges. I love the physicality of the sport, the respect amongst the students, and the high quality of instructors.

What would Jill Sockwell do with a gap year?

She would write screenplays in Australia. She shares:
I never got the chance to realize my dream of living in Australia with my best friend when we graduated college. We were supposed to have an adventure, but real life got in the way.I’d still like to do that - to travel the country and also use the time to be laser-focused on some writing projects. I have screenplays percolating in my brain and would love to get them on paper!

What would Camille Estrella do with a gap year?

She would dance in the south of France. She shares:
Montpelier, France, is home to the word’s biggest annual dance festival. After studying abroad there, I’ve always wanted to return. This time I’d take my husband and two boys. We’d live in a beautiful cottage and I’d revive my dream to dance professionally, telling stories through movement and song. I’d have balance pursuing what I love while spending time with the most important people in my life.

As one of the oldest continuously operating businesses in Maplewood, Woolleys Home Solutions has evolved throughout the energy eras, having opened it’s doors in 1924 as Woolley Coal and Ice, and adapting through global transitions from coal to oil fuel, and subsequently, the introduction of biofuels made from renewable sources. This family-owned business remains part of Maplewood’s heritage, and is poised to continue its legacy well into the future.
Happy 100th anniversary!

21/06/2024

What was once two library buildings in South Orange, each with their own histories, will be joined to become one building that represents the community itself, and will be a place where everyone matters and belongs. There’s much to look forward to in this new space designed by architect Andrew Berman, including:
- A single, double-storied, light-filled great hall
- Meeting space will be increased by 400%
- Overall library square footage will be increased by nearly 50%
- A children’s space that is double in size and includes a garden
- A teen space designated for middle and high schoolers
- A makers space and study pods large and small
- Refurbished reading rooms for quiet space
- 37% more computers
- Full accessibility for those with disabilities
Construction is due to begin this fall and the project should be completed in about 2 years. While most of the funding is complete, the foundation still needs to raise an additional $500,000 to balance the renovation budget. Find out how you can contribute at www.soplfoundation.org.

Do you have plans to travel internationally in the near future?
If so, we implore you to do your research and understand the rules around passport expiration timing.

Our publisher and editor in chief Ellen Donker learned about this the hard way, the morning of her planned trip to Portugal when she realized her passport had to be valid 90 days after her departure— with only 62 days left until her own expired.

What did she do? Where did she go? Did she make it to her 11pm flight?

SOMA Over 30 Basketball is not just a league, it’s a testament to the enduring power of friendship, fun, and shared passion. With no minimum skill level to play, “the league is really about everyone coming together to play fun, competitive basketball games,” says founder Steve Horwitz. With 95 players on the mailing list and 56 playing weekly, there are some administrative challenges, but the league has become a family, with many players bringing their kids along, exposing their love for the game to a whole new generation.
