A Navy Flag Officer “T3” Leadership First … Adolph Marix!
Adolph Marix d. OTD 1919, one of the first two Jewish graduates from the United States Naval Academy in 1868. Marix was the first American Jewish Officer to hold the rank of “Rear Admiral,” and would later retire as a Vice Admiral. Commodore Uriah Levy was our Navy’s first Jewish “Flag Officer” … when Levy served in the early part of the 19th century there no officers with the rank of “Admiral.” Marix’s His inspirational style:

- TEAMWORK: 24 of Marix’s 42 years of service was on sea duty. He was the former Executive Officer of the Battleship USS MAINE, and served as recorder on the 1898 court of inquiry which investigated the ship's explosion. He had extensive experience with the Asiatic Squadron, was decorated for valor during the Spanish American War, served with the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps and Hydrographic Office. Marix was also a survivor from an ill-fated 1871-2 expedition attempting to reach the North Pole.
- TONE Born in the Saxony (Germany) in 1848, Marix immigrated as a boy with his family to Iowa. During the Civil War, Marix’s father was a translator of European languages for President Lincoln. He was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in 1908 by President William Howard Taft, with who he became close some years earlier when Marix was Naval Attaché to the Philippines and Taft was the Territory’s Governor General.
- TENACITY: Admiral Marix died in 1919 at age 72. His remains lay in eternal rest at Arlington National Cemetery. The Naval Academy's Friends Of The Jewish Chapel maintains a nice display with Admiral Marix's in the Commodore Levy Center and Jewish Chapel's Social Hall.

May his memory be a blessing.
