Durham/Video/TV Skywriter

I’m originally from Chicago and got my start in media there with the Woodlawn Scoop community paper, which became the Woodlawn-Englewood Scoop, and finally the South Side Scoop. I also had a public affairs show called Scoop Radio on WHPK, the University of Chicago’s community/student-run station.

A year after moving to Durham, North Carolina to care for my aunt, I created the Durham Skywriter, with a layout that was based on the South Side Scoop. I started out on WNCU, North Carolina Central University’s NPR station, with a Latin/Brazilian jazz music show called Rice & Beans and then gravitated over to public affairs with Radio Skywriter. I experimented with various platforms on the internet and decided to go totally online. The Durham Skywriter ceased publication as a printed newspaper and became “Durham NC’s online community paper.” Radio Skywriter became TV Skywriter on YouTube, and thanks to a wider reach, I decided to interview interesting people from around the world. At least half of my guests are still from Durham; I never want to overlook my local market. I also have a 5- to 10-minute daily show called Bull City Notes, which airs live on Facebook, where I announce what’s happening in Durham. I also encourage viewers to seize opportunities such as grants offered by the City or other entities.

I enjoy showcasing the good works of local residents and organizations by making microdocumentaries about them, and sometimes I cover the tough stories that need to be pushed to the forefront. I also help artists, businesses, and organizations tell their stories by working with them to make videos (and take photos) on a freelance basis.
