UNDP hosts Zulum in Geneva as Sec-Gen wants Borno’s humanitarian model adopted by UN

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has hosted the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Zulum, in Geneva, Switzerland, for discussions over resettlement of internally displaced persons and their livelihoods.

The meeting, held on Thursday, focused on “IDP solutions plans” with specifics on “Government leadership, community driven approach and voluntary return, relocation & integration.”

As part of the meeting, Secretary-General of the UN, expressed his desire for the UN to adopt Borno State's successful humanitarian model.

This was disclosed at a meeting hosted by the Centre International De Conference (CICH) hosted by the Office of the Special Adviser, William Chemaly.

The Borno Model is a non-kinetic approach aimed at handling counter-insurgency efforts and addressing humanitarian crises for over one decade.

Governor Zulum, at the meeting, highlighted the successes achieved in Borno State through the implementation of his administration's novel approach to the humanitarian situation tagged “Borno Model”.

Zulum had previously attended a breakfast Strategic Country Update on North East, Nigeria, organized and hosted by the famous Graduate Institute, University of Geneva.

The governor engaged over 20 academics, humanitarian, peace, security, and development actors, think-tanks, and researchers analyzing Borno’s practical experiences on the Boko Haram crisis and how the non-kinetic approach yields results.

The UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Mohamed Yahya, spoke while the Nigerian Ambassador to Geneva also made presentation on Nigeria’s stand.

Zulum also attended meeting at the UN Palais hosted by Raouf Mazou, the Assistant High Commissioner Operations at the United Nations High Commission on Refugees.

The governor was accompanied on the trip by Borno’s focal person for the World Bank’s Multisectoral Recovery and Peace Building Project (MCRP)

Security: Mali refurbishes 4 Operational Vehicles for CJTF, Hunters and Vigilantes in Gubio

In order to consolidate the improved security situation in the state and Gubio Local Government Area, The Transition Committee Chairman Hon. Mali Bulama Mali Gubio on Tuesday handed over four (4) refurbished operational vehicles to civilian TJF, Hunters and Vigilants operating in Gubio.

Mali handed over two vehicles in a symbolic ceremony to the leadership of the Civilian TJF, a group of youth volunteers who support the military in the fight against the insurgency in the state, while the other two had already been deployed to patrol in Gubio..

The vehicles, which were grounded because of knocked engines, burst tires, and many other defaults, were completely overhauled in Maiduguri.

Mali noted that the CJTF, Vigilantes, and the Hunters in Gubio do not have any operational vehicles working because all the available ones have been grounded. Hence, the need to refurbish the vehicles.

He further explained that this was a call to support the selfless bravery of the state governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, towards restoring peace in the state.

Receiving the vehicles on behalf of the CJTF, Sector Commander Modu Ajami applauded the transition committee Chairman Honourable Mali for the vehicles and all the support he has been giving the group towards maintaining security.

He also thanked the governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, for giving enabling conditions to the security sector towards returning peace to the state.

Maiduguri Market: Reconstruction starts this week, Zulum says

Reconstruction of Maiduguri Monday market which was razed on Sunday by an early morning fire disaster is to begin this week, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced.

Zulum made this known on Monday when he received a group of prominent Borno citizens living in Abuja.

The citizens who came to Maiduguri were led by Ambassador Babagana Kingibe on a sympathy visit to the government and people of Borno State.

Maiduguri Monday market, established about 40 years ago, was said to be the largest in the northeast sub-region, bringing together thousands of buyers and sellers.

“We are constituting a committee that will coordinate all matters relating to the Monday market inferno. Most importantly, the committee will look into the possibility of rehabilitating the stalls at the market. Insha Allah, the work will commence tomorrow (Tuesday).

“While we are waiting for support from the federal government, Borno State Government will not completely fold its arms waiting, we have to start somewhere”, Zulum said.

Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to the delegation which comprised the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kolo Kyari, Chairman of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Mutawali Kashim Ibrahim Imam among other Borno indigenes.

Speaking earlier, leader of the delegation, elder statesman, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, commiserated with victims of the fire disaster.

He also commended the steps taken by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum towards cushioning the hardship faced by the affected traders.

Monday market disaster: Zulum announces N1 billion for emergency relief, consoles victims; sets up assessment committee

Following an outbreak of a major fire incident which has largely raised down the Maiduguri Monday Market, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum has in a quick statewide broadcast, announced an emergency relief of one billion naira to provide urgent support to victims, pending assessment of the incident.

The Governor’s spokesman, Malam Isa Gusau, in a statement said Zulum made a broadcast soon after he had visited the scene of the incident and had mobilized armed forces to secure the area to prevent breakdown of law and order.

Below are Zulum’s words which he made in Kanuri and Hausa languages:

“My fellow people of Borno State,

We woke up today with a very sad and unfortunate fire disaster at the Maiduguri Monday market. This is very unfortunate but we believe that this is decreed by Allah. Inna lillahi Wa inna ilayhi raajiun. I feel deeply pained by this incident and I know how painful it is for anyone to work hard over years to build his or her business but end up losing that investment in seconds. I really feel the pains of everyone affected by this incident. I commiserate with all of you. I kindly and most respectfully urge you to be calm and patient. I know how bad you feel and insha’Allah, the Borno State Government is already taking the following measures to ameliorate the situation:

1. I have approved the release of one billion naira as emergency relief for us to quickly support victims of the disaster because we know that some of them may even have difficulty of surviving the next few days. Many rely on daily businesses in order to cater for themselves.

2. We are setting up an assessment committee that will comprise respectable individuals from our society including representatives of the victims, for us to speedily assess damages, and
