Can you spot heat stress in your horse?

First, it’s important to understand what heat stress is. Heat stress occurs when your horse’s regular method of cooling down—sweat—is not enough to keep your horse’s body temperature regulated. This typically occurs after a prolonged period of exercise in hot and/or humid environments or when a horse is out of shape, causing your horse’s fluid or electrolyte levels to fluctuate.

Don't get your horse into a tricky spot this summer, refresh your heat-stress knowledge with these prevention tips.

"Being able to feel what your horse is doing through your seat takes hours of practice and will be a difficult thing to master when you’re first starting out. But the more hours you put in, the more confident you’ll become with your seat while riding and the better connection you’ll have with your horse."

It takes a great horseman to develop and understand feel. However, finding feel doesn’t come easy. Al Dunning breaks down the things you need to know, both in and out of the saddle, to develop feel with your horse, and how it’ll help you better connect with him.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗺𝗮

You mount up for your evening ride and, just like clockwork, your horse starts coughing. Three or four coughs as soon as you start trotting—then it’s over and you can get to work. It’s just something he’s always done. Nothing to worry about, right?

Wrong! While there are plenty of horses that cough at the beginning of a ride, it doesn’t make it normal! In fact, those coughs are telling you there’s something irritating your horse’s respiratory tract. And respiratory disease is nothing to ignore.

In fact, respiratory problems are second only to musculoskeletal issues when it comes to limiting athletic performance in horses. Estimates say as many as 20 to 30% of pleasure and performance horses have some level of respiratory disease, and many of those respiratory problems start with a cough.

Learn what steps you should take to protect your horse's respiratory health or asthma. ⬇️
