Today marks what would have been Trudy Taylor's 100th birthday. In addition to being a force of nature, Trudy was also the matriarch of the very musical Taylor family (Alex Taylor, James Taylor, Kate Taylor's Music, Livingston Taylor and Hugh Taylor). To mark the occasion and remember this remarkable woman, we are sharing this video made by Liz Witham, Trudy's granddaughter (and Film Truth Productions co founder).

Did you know that October is bat awareness month? Join us at the Edgartown Library on 10/4 to see a short film on bats from our Sustainable Martha's Vineyard documentary series, with a Q&A about bats afterwards with wildlife biologist Liz Olsen.

October is Bat Appreciation Month!

Did you know Martha’s Vineyard is home to several bat species? While often portrayed as scary, they are incredibly important players in our ecosystem. Several local bat species are under threat of extinction due to a non-native fungus. This fungus awakens the bats during winter hibernation, which puts them at risk of starvation and dehydration. Since 2014, BiodiversityWorks has been studying the Northern long-eared bat in an effort to protect their threatened populations.

On October 4th at 5:30pm at the Edgartown Public Library, our very own Liz Olson will be speaking about this research. Liz Witham and Ken Wentworth of Film Truth Productions will also be showing a short documentary about our bat research on the Island.

This event is free to attend and is sponsored by Friends of the Edgartown Free Public Library

An unfortunate update on the injuries to the fourth calf born this year. After studying photos and video taken on Friday, biologists have downgraded the calf’s health assessment. Stay tuned at Follow the Journey - the North Atlantic right whale documentary to receive updates.

"Derecha's" injured right whale calf was last seen Friday afternoon by aerial survey and on-water teams with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Medical experts and biologists spent the weekend reviewing images and video to continue assessments of the injury and prognosis and to determine potential next steps. Based on the images received, the calf's wounds are worse than originally thought - for example, some of the wounds are to the lip and may not be repairable, leading to impacts on feeding.

The calf's prognosis was downgraded from "guarded" to "poor". The current plan is to locate the mother and calf pair, obtain images in order to update our assessment of the calf's injuries, condition and behavior. Antibiotics may be delivered if warranted.

This is a huge effort made possible by many experts from partner agencies all over the country including the FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, the Wildlife Resources Division - Georgia DNR, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, SeaWorld (https://seaworldentertainment.com/blog/), Blue World Research Institute (https://blueworldresearchinstitute.org/), and ifaw.

In the meantime we ask anyone with information regarding the calf's injuries and additional sightings to contact 1-877-WHALE-HELP (1-877-942-5343).

NOAA urges everyone to please give these animals their space. Mom/calf pairs spend the majority of their time at, or a few feet below the water's surface in the Southeast U.S. This is a critical and vulnerable time for right whale moms to bond with their calves - law requires staying away at least 500 yards by air (including drones) and by sea.

The protection of these animals is literally in the hands of all mariners on the water and all businesses that service those vessels. Stay educated, remain alert, and slow down while traveling through areas where right whales are found.

When we heard of Ram Dass's passing a few days ago, it brought us back to this interview we filmed between Dan and Ram Dass at Omega Institute 15+ years ago for A Certain Kind of Beauty. Ram Dass had recently had a stroke, and Dan was in the midst of a series of setbacks in his journey with MS. This posted in loving memory of both Dan and Ram Dass, may their strength and wisdom continue to be an example that helps to light the way for us earth bound humans.

We didn’t get home in time to get a tree this year but we really wanted to hang this ornament we got on Campobello Island so we improvised with our fox tail fern.

Sustainable Martha's Vineyard documentary series

Who's growing food without pesticides and fossil fuel fertilizers on Martha's Vineyard?

"Forward to Nature" the latest from our Sustainable Martha's Vineyard documentary series.

Kevin Brennan takes growing locally to a new level with his innovative orchard project at Island Grown's Thimble Farm. By carefully observing natural systems, he designed a food-producing system that utilizes local soil types, key-line drainage, multi canopy forestry and livestock grazing to cut the use of fossil fuels, fertilizers and watering. The idea is to work with what already thrives in our biosphere while bringing the community together through nature connection and the helping hands of Jamie O'Gorman, John Ripley Stanwood, Emily Palena, Alex BenDavid and others.

Film Truth Productions is excited to announce the online PREMIERE of "Ancestral Seeds" from our Sustainable Martha's Vineyard documentary series. Maize or Corn as it is more commonly known in the United States, has had a co-evolutionary relationship with humans in the Americas for thousands of years. Melinda Rabbitt DeFeo continues this relationship with this year’s crop of “King Philips corn” and shares it with the students at the Edgartown School's Farm and Garden. Sitting in the garden just outside the school, Melinda explains, “Everything I need to teach I can use just a handful of seeds.” Her goals include incorporating farm, food and wholistic health into children’s learning experiences in the school system.
