Adventures NW magazine Adventures Northwest is a quarterly magazine dedicated to exploration and appreciation of Cascadia. To inform, enlighten and inspire.

Our passion is to help our readers discover—or re-discover—deep connections to the natural world, to dive deep and embrace terra incognita. Our mission is to give expression to the transformative beauty of the natural world though compelling essays, short stories, photo essays, nature-inspired art, meditations and poetry. Edward Abbey sums it up for us: “All we have, it seems, is the beauty of life in art and nature, and the love that these inspire.”

Watch this great video from the Koma Kulshan chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society about winter ecology!! David Lukas lives in the Methow Valley, and has spent his career studying natural history and winter ecology. The chapter meeting is the first 11 minutes or so; if you want to skip to the lecture, start at 12 minutes. A great watch!!

A sign of the times....

Most of Washington’s 9,000 + miles of national forest trails won’t have their own trail crews in 2025 due to a budget crisis and staffing cuts at the U.S. Forest Service.

That means you’re likely to see trails blocked with logs, unsanitary bathrooms and overflowing trash cans when visiting national forest trails this year. Some trails might even be closed.

WTA is ready to step in and fill the gap — but we need your support. Please donate today to help us keep trails in our national forests open and safe for hiking: give.wta.org/give/657660/ #!/donation/checkout?c_src=fs25fba

In his book "The Joy of Winter Hiking," author Derek Dellinger shares his love for the outdoors in its most inhospitable season. He makes the point that winter, when many of us become depressed and seek solace by hibernating, is actually when going outside and reconnecting with nature may do us the most good. The book is a great introduction to winter hiking, both philosophically and specifically, as the author provides detailed information on how to be safe on the trail by selecting appropriate trails, clothing, and gear, and understanding how to interpret snow and weather conditions that will affect our experience. The author is from upstate New York, but his advice is appropriate for all of us, and the text is accompanied by beautiful photographs that will make you want to get outside!
