Matthew Buitron - River Talk Weekly
Vincent van Gogh once said, I am seeking. I am striving. I am in it with all my heart.”

Art can help us to better understand our history, culture, our lives, and the experience of others in a manner that cannot be achieved through other means, while it can also be a source of inspiration, reflection, and joy.

One of our local areas most prolific artists is Anna Norris In the beginning of Anna Norris’ painting life, she fell in love with acrylic paints, painting the walls of their children’s nursery room, once her and her husband Ted Norris began having kids, and from there, she kept going.

Prior to children and acrylic painting, Anna studied for a period of four years and majored in art history at the Southern Oregon University, in Ashland Oregon, from 1976 to 1980. “I was totally obsessed with Renaissance art when I began, absolutely obsessed.” Said Anna Norris, of Norris Art Studio & Gallery in Camas, WA.

After college, Anna’s artistic methods evolved into impressionism, which is an art form that developed in France in the nineteenth century and is based on the practice of painting out of doors and spontaneously 'on the spot' rather than in a studio, from sketches.

As of now, Anna has completed over one hundred (100+) requested and commissioned paintings, and a plethora of
many of her own desired productions as well. “I find that as I’ve grown, my artistic techniques have loosened up, and now I just really love laying down colors next to each other, and I’m finding that to be more fascinating and satisfying.” Anna describes.

One of many places to view and enjoy a nice collection of Anna’s breathtaking paintings is the Hotel Stevenson, located in Stevenson WA. Terri Sauer, the owner of the hotel, used to own the Camas Hotel and that’s where Anna and Terri first met.

“Anna Norris who curated the artwork for Hotel Stevenson, studied the area in Skamania County and along the Columbia River Gorge before painting the amazing collection of art that is on display and available for purchase at Hotel Stevenson.” Said Terri Sauer, owner and operator of the Stevenson Hotel. “Her keen eye for color and texture reflects both the beauty and complexity of the Pacific Northwest landscape.” Terri concludes, “Anna’s art invites viewers to pause and reflect on the environment around them, offering a deeper connection to nature and the area around them.”

Anna has contributed 15 painting to the Hotel Stenson. Every room in the Hotel Stevenson has an Anna Norris painting within, all comprised of local scenes. The hallways of the hotel also exhibit a nice selection of Anna’s paintings that are for sale, for a remarkably affordable pricing “It was really fun for me to visit Stevenson and to learn more about the area, like the local iconic - Sweeney the Goat, and all of the beautiful landscapes, structures and people in the community.”

Anna was also invited to produce a mural on the side of the Camas Hotel, of the Camas lilies, which was a downtown beautification project initiated and lead by the Downtown Camas Association (DCA).

"Anna is a gem in our community!” explains Carrie Shulstad, the Executive Director of the Downtown Camas Association. “She has advanced the art scene in Downtown Camas in many ways. Anna has added beautiful murals to our downtown landscape including one on Birch Street that she worked on with a senior high school student as her senior project. It's one of my favorites as it includes so many of the things that make Camas unique and beloved. In addition to showing as a professional gallery artist, she can always be found at our downtown plein air events painting the town that she loves and many times including our historic mill in her art pieces.”

Carrie elaborates, “She is kind, inclusive, encouraging to new artists and has wicked talent. We are very blessed to have her as a part of Downtown Camas! Anna was instrumental in making (Empty Bowls Camas), a successful Treasure House Food Bank fundraiser"

Together, Anna & Ted’s plan was to open a pottery studio and art gallery after Ted retired from his Medical Administration position with Vancouver Clinic, by building a good name to open the art studio with. “I did a lot of donated murals in downtown Camas. I just wanted to be there and be present.” Anna explains.

Recently, she finished a painting of a local downtown patron Paul and his well-known dog Rue, often seen walking in downtown. “Paul said to me, you know, if you paint a picture of my dog, it'll sell!” Anna describes, “So I said, well let’s do it right now; go stand over there, and he did. I painted my perception of him and Rue, and that painting sold quickly, just as Paul had predicted it would.”

The most recent public art that Anna has completed is of the Adam Street Bar & Grill and the 76 Gas Station, during the Plein Air Fair in downtown Camas in September of 2024; another Downtown Camas Association project. Anna is also painting an impression of the outside of Nico Bella Salon in downtown Camas for her good friend Wendy, the owner and operator of the Salon.

Anna’s hope for everyone, is that they have a creative outlet in their life, whatever it may be, in hopes that they have something that brings passion to their soul, that they can be shared with others, and likewise.

One really fun way to take in Anna’s art, is to take advantage of the Hotel Stevenson’s weekend rates, to affordably stay the night(s) and take in and enjoy Anna’s gorgeous paintings, while visiting the amazing Columbia River Gorge and the cozy city of Stevenson, WA

On Monday we had the opportunity to familiarize our volunteers with the rescue equipment from our response partners at Skamania EMS & Rescue. Our volunteers got to go over tools and awareness level procedures for the existing Rescue 71 vehicle as well as got a tour of the new Rescue vehicle that will be going into service soon.

These types of collaborative trainings work to enhance our response to the community both agencies serve!
