Sponsorship can be broken down into four distinct phases, and below are the stages and tips for phase 4.:

1. Before you begin to look for sponsors
2. As you are searching for sponsors
3. When you have connected with a potential sponsor
4. Once you have secured a sponsor

Makes sense, right?

You can go back to find the previous ones or write 'sponsor' in the comments and I'll send you all of the tips in an email so you have it in one spot.

Once you have secured a sponsor:

1. Deliver Value Beyond the Proposal: Meet and exceed expectations, or under-promise and over-deliver. That is the true spirit of a great salesperson. This will help you in the long run by setting you apart from the crowd, earning respect, showing that you are trustworthy, and leading to more opportunities through repeat sponsors and referrals.

2. Embrace Sponsorship Opportunities: Participate in every opportunity that comes your way. If a sponsor requests you be at events, photo shoots, or other events, make every effort to be there. If the track or series is looking for event participants, be the one they go to first.

3. Deliver on Your Promises: At minimum, always fulfill your sponsorship obligations. This begins with knowing the marketing goals, creating a plan to achieve those goals, tracking and updating the sponsor, and pivoting if necessary to meet the goals. That is the minimum. Find ways to go the extra mile to exceed expectations, or surprise and delight your sponsors.

4. Be a Good Brand Ambassador: Always present yourself professionally and respectfully. Often, sponsors expect to keep and gain respect by associating themselves with an athlete. Do not do anything to ruin their reputation – or yours, both on and off the track.

5. Track Your Results: When you bring on a new sponsor, goals should be set – by you and the business. When you set SMART goals, you set both parties up for success. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Measuring your results will tell you if you are reaching your goals for successful sponsorships. Once you have achieved the desired results, document the process and the results to use as a case study fo

The sponsorship search can be broken up into 4 stages.

These are the first stages and the things you should be working on before you start looking for sponsors.

Don't stop once you have found some sponsors!

Look for sponsors year round to make sure you have the funds you need to finish the season 💪

Sponsorship can be broken down into four distinct phases, and below are tips for phase 3.:

1. Before you begin to look for sponsors
2. As you are searching for sponsors
3. When you have connected with a potential sponsor
4. Once you have secured a sponsor

Makes sense, right?

I posted the first section just over a week ago. You can go back to find it or write 'sponsor' in the comments and I'll send you all of the tips in an email so you have it in one spot.

Before I go on to the next section, know you could work on each section simultaneously, perfecting everything from your sponsorship pitch to your ex*****on and reporting. There is nothing that cannot be improved upon.

When you have found a potential sponsor:

1. Offer Activation Ideas: Some companies have no idea what to do when they sign up for a sponsorship opportunity. Once you know the marketing goals, you can suggest ways they can use the sponsorship opportunity. These activations are what is going to make the sponsorship successful or not. The activation can be anything from social media contests, a t-shirt toss, handing out coupons, appearing in their ads, bringing your car to a company event, hosting a VIP Day at the track for top employees, giving pit access, and mentioning the company in your newsletter. Offer fun and unique ways for the sponsor to reach their marketing goals. You may be required to plan and execute some of the activations and some the company may do entirely. A difficult thing to understand is that the sponsor should use at least the same amount of funds you receive to create activations. Without that funding, you risk the sponsor wondering what the benefit of the sponsorship was and will not return next year.

2. Develop a Winning Proposal: Your marketing deck is not your proposal. In fact, your proposal should be a simple, professional-looking document outlining goals, responsibilities, funding, and measurement of success.

3. Offer Measurable Benefits: Exposure of their brand to potentially thousands of people does not translate to sales, customer acquisition, or retention well. We will help you increase your social media followers by X %, we have a goal of getting 2,000 people to sign up for your newsletter, We will hand out 5,000 coupons and will help drive those people to your store with an expected redemption rate of 20%. Your social media following is also a measurable benefit you can offer.

4. Focus on Long-Term Partnerships: A marketing partner who comes back the next year or signs a multi-year agreement with you is more valuable than the actual dollar amount they are offering. What they are truly giving you is a lot of time and effort saved when searching for sponsors later. Offer incentives for companies that are long-term partners. No one likes to discount what they sell (your sponsorship). Instead, are there things you can add as a ‘bonus’?

5. Define your value proposition: Think of this as your elevator pitch that you can say quickly, confidently, and truthfully. “I help local restaurants increase foot traffic by 20% when they market their business through motorsports marketing.”

Sponsorship can be broken down into four distinct phases:

1. Before you begin to look for sponsors
2. As you are searching for sponsors
3. When you have connected with a potential sponsor
4. Once you have secured a sponsor

Makes sense, right?

I posted the first section about a week ago. You can go back to find it or write 'sponsor' in the comments and I'll send you all of the tips in an email so you have it in one spot.

Before I go on to the next section, you could be working on each section simultaneously, perfecting everything from your sponsorship pitch to your ex*****on and reporting. There is nothing that cannot be improved upon.

As you are searching:

1. Know Your Value: Know what you and your team bring to the table. List everything you can think of that you could add to your proposals including your audience and social media followers, the logo on the car is a given, but it does have some value, the track’s social media, anything you can add on adds value - IF it is something that your sponsor’s needs. Listen to what the sponsors say they need. Is there something you can provide for them that may seem out of scope for sponsorship? That would be a great way to add value to your sponsorship proposal.

2. Define your value proposition: Think of this as your elevator pitch that you can say quickly, confidently, and truthfully. “I help local restaurants increase their foot traffic by 20% when they market their business through motorsports marketing.” This will help you when you are networking. Speaking of networking

3. Network, network, network: Talk to anyone you can, and always ask if there is anyone they know who may be interested in marketing their business with motorsports. Attend industry events, and trade shows, and connect with sponsors and owners at the track. Build an extensive connection list on LinkedIn. Above all, build genuine relationships with the people you meet in person or online.

4. Seek Media Attention: TV, radio, and newspapers do not have the funding they used to have, and often reach out to the community for news. Be the one who provides that information to them. Get to know your local sports and community reporters Send race results to your local media immediately as the races finish so that they have the information. Keep your reporters in the know of events your sponsors may be hosting and your involvement with the sponsor and event.

5. Give Back to the Community: Find a cause that you and your team resonate with and find a way to help them. This will be a great way to not only do good, but to connect with the community, network, and give you content for social media or newsletters.

6. Never Give Up: You will hear many no’s before you ever hear a yes. Stay focused on your goals and the end results. Enjoy the process of getting to know people along the way.

7. Be Patient and Persistent: Securing sponsorship takes time and effort. There is no way around that. Surround yourself with good people who have your best interests in mind and enlist their help. Don't get discouraged, and don’t give up.

8. Learn from Rejection: Whether it is an email that did not receive a response or a well-thought-out and collaborative proposal that was eventually rejected, take time to think about what may have gone wrong and how you can improve.

9. Track Your Progress: Whether you use a spreadsheet, a CRM, or a project management tool, keep track of your outreach to help you plan your next steps.

02/07/2024

Today and tomorrow Oxford Plains Speedway (OPS) hosts the inaugural All That’s Metal Celebration of America 300.

Kyle Busch was an early entry in the event, and Busch’s Cup spotter Derek Kneeland convinced Busch to return to the track where he swept both ’big races’, the PASS 150 and the Oxford 250 in 2011.

“Kyle and I raced LEE together last year,” Kneeland said. “He enjoyed it and is doing it again and said he would do some others if scheduling worked out right and good cars were available.”

Kneeland knew exactly who he could reach out to that has the equipment Busch would be comfortable in.

“I've known Archie (St. Hilaire) a long time. He used to own Cup, Xfinity, and East cars. So, he was the first one I went to last year.,” Kneeland explained. “This is a new BIG money and big lap race at Oxford. Kyle has won the Oxford 250 so he was on board to try to win the next big crown jewel at Oxford with this new COA 300.”

Kneeland has been taking on a new role as a driver and racing his own Late Model for the past few years. As Oxford Plains is Kneeland’s home track, he will also be among the field of drivers in the inaugural Celebration of America 300. With both drivers having experience at Oxford, would Kneeland be able to offer advice to the veteran Busch?

“I’ll be racing my brand-new car there against him (hopefully lol). I’ll never be able to lend him advice, he's the man.

I'll be leaning on him for info through practice and qualifying day and hopefully it's enough to go and have a solid race, a place where I'm confident, have had my best races and finishes.”

It can take a crew to make a successful race weekend happen. Kneeland explained the details of the makings of the team came together. “As far as Kyle, he will be driving Jay Cushman's car. His son Austin Teras races weekly and has a great and successful program. Archie and Peter Petit, Weirs GMC, Spencer Paving Group, and Keen Parts were the ones who jumped on board to help make it happen with it being tires, fuel, etc. He's in great equipment and should have a very legitimate shot.”
