When it comes to getting your story covered, it's about relationships. Get to know the reporters covering your business topic or area. When possible, reach out to them with support and encouragement when you notice them covering a story that you like. Don't always be "that" person who only reaches out when you need something.

From our CEO Liza Weidle "When I worked for the N&O and NBC17, I would see on average 30 pitches a day. I scanned the subject lines to see if they fit my audience and then checked to see the sender. If it came from a known source, I would star it and then circle back to see if it would fit that day or could be held for later that week. I preferred the sources who gave me all the important details (25 words or less) in the email. It was annoying to get the same pitch several times in a short period.

I rarely opened attachments. I appreciated the sources who included links that lead to a landing page, press kit, or cloud storage unit for fast and easy access to the assets such as images, videos, graphics that I would need.

Remembering how it felt to be on the receiving end of media pitches has made me a better sender of them. I appreciate my reporter friends and do my best to help them when I can.

What's one of your tips to getting coverage for your stories?

Timeout Tuesday - laugh out loud today! A friend recently asked about the bird videos I share - it's because they make me laugh and I hope some of you laugh at them too.

Who or what makes you laugh? In this picture is dear Bonnie who is one of our best giggly grandgirls. Love her laugh and this picture of her with her older sister enjoying a precious moment on a swing.

From Liza Weidle: Valentine's Day is upon us. As a way of honoring my Mom and Dad, we find ways to celebrate the day with cards or little gifts to others. I have so many sweet childhood memories of the ways my Dad especially found ways to make sure I felt loved on Valentine's Day.

For some of you, this day may bring a renewed washing over of grief from either a recent loss of a loved one or memory of another loss. According to licensed grief and trauma therapist Gina Moffa, LCSW "The holidays can bring up a vivid re-experiencing of our grief in many forms. At a time of year known for traditions and togetherness with friends and family, celebrations may accentuate our pain. As ourselves or loved ones are confronted with the reminder of loss, it’s extra important to take care of ourselves–however we need."

I recently read Gina's new book "Moving on Doesn't Mean Letting Go." Some of the thoughts are captured in this FRS Communications book review blog. If you are someone you know is struggling, I hope this blog helps and consider buying Gina's book to keep on hand as a heartfelt, practical map through loss—one that can shift the pain of your grief even when things feel unpredictable and overwhelming.

The greatest gift we can give another person is to cheer them on as they uncover their passions and calling in life. As I lean into a new season of life, it’s time for me to offer the same value of mentoring that I received from others. I want to inspire people to become fuller versions of who they are. At the end of February, our Chief Encouragement Officer Liza Weidle has the honor of being selected for the Triangle Business Journal’s Mentoring Monday. This opportunity is a little different than other mentoring relationships because of the speed of the event. We are hoping that the connections made will linger longer than the 15 minutes offered for each round.

The shorter rounds allow time to focus on character instead of job skills and competency. As we each become more self-aware of the value we can add to each other, we can truly become better in our jobs as well as relationships. Won’t you join me?

Register today for Triangle Business Journal‘s Mentoring Monday on February 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. at TowneBank Center in Raleigh.

The greatest gift we can give another person is to cheer them on as they uncover their passions and calling in life. At every stage of my career, I had a mentor. I sought out people who energized a…

What are some of your family favorite Christmas traditions?

Someone once said that “prior planning prevents poor performance.” This is especially true of the busy holiday season. With a little planning you can avoid much of the franticness, frustration, and…

Time to celebrate 🥂 Our home town ranked as one of the tops for livability!

Here's what Livability wrote "Cary is a flourishing city that offers a fantastic arts scene (gorgeous public art, galleries and more), a variety of eateries, must- visit breweries and great sporting events."

Cary-home to the USA Baseball National Training Complex and WakeMed Soccer Park has about 180,000 residents. The town just west of Raleigh also received nods for its safety, public schools and proximity to businesses in Research Triangle Park.

"Nestled between the stunning Western Carolina mountains and the famous East Coast beaches of the Outer Banks, Cary, NC, uses its enviable location to its
advantage."

It was a beautiful day to celebrate the groundbreaking of Summit at Sawyer. This 154-unit neighborhood will offer affordable housing options in the heart of Southeast Raleigh. This day has been many years in the making with partnerships that include the City of Raleigh, Mills Construction, and Mount Pleasant Worship and Outreach Center. Some of the funding for the community initiative come from the Federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program. The Cary Women's Giving Network is accepting grant applications from now to NOON on April 4, 2023.

To apply or share with a Cary area nonprofit that prioritizes women and children, please click here => https://lnkd.in/eGi_nTX

About the CWGN Grant Process: Cary Women’s Giving Network members use a collaborative decision-making process to provide grants to local 501(c)3 charitable organizations that have a strong impact on critical and/or emerging needs in the Town of Cary, NC. Grant projects that focus on women and children will be prioritized. Please note, any nonprofit that receives a grant will be asked to wait one year before reapplying.

Once the application deadline has passed, the Grants Committee vets all the applications and makes recommendations to the full Network membership. Each member votes for her choice of grant award, and final decisions are made once all the votes have been tallied. An awards ceremony is typically held in June to celebrate grant recipients.

In 2022, the Network awarded more than $12,500 in grants. Total amount of Grants awarded 2013 to 2022: $143,500.00

The Cary Women's Giving Network is a giving circle of the North Carolina Community Foundation and led by a volunteer board. The Giving Network leverages the power of collective giving through a local network that supports the community in a purposeful way. The Network supports charitable organizations serving women, children and families in the Cary community.

The Giving Network is designed to maximize women’s leadership in philanthropy by engaging and educating its membership and increasing charitable contributions. Our CEO Liza Weidle is a member and thankful for all the CWGN members of which just a few of the dear women are in the picture below from a recent lunch.

The swearing-in ceremony for NC Senator Gale Adcock felt like a family reunion and that's just the way she wanted it. Senator Adcock was surrounded by family, close friends, and special guests as her Mom held the Bible and Town of Cary, NC Mayor Harold Weinbrecht administered the oath of office at the North Carolina Nurses Association. She is the first nurse elected to the NC Senate. Gale is also one of our dearest friends and mentors. I am so inspired by the many ways she makes our community stronger

This blog is from our CEO Liza Weidle. We hope you will read and share with others.

"My heart aches when I hear of another su***de. It’s like the pain from losing two loved ones to su***de comes rushing forward. Nothing can stop the aching. Time heals some wounds, but not this one.

The path forward for all of us when we learn about the tragedies at North Carolina State University is to become aware of others. Aware of subtleties in behavior change that may include withdrawal from normal activities. Aware of the pain in the eyes. Aware of the catch in the voice when you ask, “How are you doing?”

It wasn't that long ago when a group of parents and community leaders including my dear friend and now Senator Gale Adcock helped with an effort at Wake County Public School System to teach students that it's OK to ask for help and how to support a friend who is struggling using the Yellow Ribbon Su***de Prevention Program "Be-A-Link" Save a Life! steps:

Stay with the person – you are their lifeline

Listen, really listen. Take them seriously!

Get, or call, help immediately.

Today, we can just call or text 988 to be a link and save a life.

Will join us today in creating a culture of kindness?

As the world waits expectantly, it's always wonderful to reflect on how Mary felt in her song that is captured in Luke. She is praising the God who has chosen her to be the mother of His only son. Her words are powerful and hold lessons we can learn today. The message for us is that we are to have faith. We are to trust in our God. No matter the situation or circumstance, God has it all in his hands. We should strive to imitate the heart and mind of Mary in every situation. Her words are not just for the Advent season, they are for all seasons.

Luke 1:46-55

“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”
