EdGems Math strongly supports author Liesl McConchie’s research on the best ways to motivate K-8 students.

In her new mini-book, "7 Strategies to Boost Motivation in Secondary Learners", Liesl points to a motivational approach that we champion in our middle school math program, "Make It Social". EdGems Math Teacher Gems activities grew out of evidence-based research that students are more receptive to learning when they engage with, rationalize with, and defend their arguments and thinking in the company of their peers, versus learning in a passive environment.

The worst of Covid is over, but getting kids to their pre-pandemic levels of participation is a common challenge teachers face. There are solutions.

Many teachers agree that their students aren’t as vocal in class as they were pre-Covid. Miriam Plotinsky of Edutopia notes a few methods that may help teachers get students talking again:

1. Facilitate movement activities in the classroom. This will create connections between students and allow them to feel more comfortable answering questions in front of the class.
2. Utilize “fun” tools to start conversations, such as Post-Its. These allow students to target their writing skills prior to speaking out loud in a way that may be new and exciting to them.
3. Allow students to reflect on their own participation levels. By increasing self-awareness of participation in class, students can set goals on how to improve their amount and methods of communication with others.

Students who still do not respond to social activities like these may need extra attention from teachers to help boost their social confidence. Classrooms are meant to be filled with voices and collaboration to ensure that engagement with subject content is happening.

Strengthen Math Classroom Culture with Positivity

Students are proven to respond better behaviorally and academically when they receive compliments in the classroom often. Intentionally providing positive praise in the math classroom helps to increase student confidence and decrease unwanted behaviors which can serve to be a distraction to the group.

Dani Fry notes in the Edutopia article “The Power of Compliments in the Math Classroom” that teachers should follow 4 main guidelines for providing compliments to ensure targeted, effective praise that leads to positive effects:
1. Provide authentic and unexpected compliments.
2. Make compliments specific and observable.
3. Be timely when stating positive praise.
4. Emphasize the process used over the students’ personal abilities.

Explaining reasons for why good behavior should be continued into the future leads to deeper understanding by students and should be utilized as much as possible upon providing complimentary feedback. Utilizing these strategies can lead to an uplifted classroom culture where both students and teachers can truly thrive.
