The City is experiencing flooding in several areas. PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THROUGH ANY ROADWAY THAT IS FLOODED! Doing so is a safety risk and could be harmful to you, your vehicle and potentially causing additional damage to homes.

Water depth is not always obvious. Just six inches of fast moving water can sweep you off your feet. 12 inches of fast moving water can carry away a small car, and 18-24 inches can carry away most large SUV's. Be safe, be smart, turn around don't drown!

We hope this photo of Marjory Stoneman Douglas from 1920 on the steps of her beloved Coconut Grove cottage inspires you that it's never too late to accomplish something great.

For over 70 years, Marjory lived here and dedicated her life to protecting the Everglades. But it wasn't until 1969, when she was 79 years old, that she formed Friends of the Everglades, proving that you can make an impact at any age!

The 2023 sea turtle nesting season in Florida is off to a great start!

The preliminary statewide nest totals as of April 30th are as follows:
🥚 1,288 loggerheads nests (640 in 2022)
🥚 3 green turtle nests (1 in 2022)
🥚 608 leatherback nests (800 in 2022)
🥚 6 Kemp’s ridley nests (1 in 2022)

It’s Bat Appreciation Day!

Today we’re celebrating Bat Appreciation Day – and we have a lot to appreciate. These flying friends play a vital role in insect control by reducing harmful agriculture pests and those that spread disease, but most may be glad to hear that they are mosquitos’ worst nightmare. Most bats in the US are insectivores, and while mosquitos only make up a small proportion of a bat’s diet, a group can easily consume thousands of mosquitos in just one night!

When you hear ‘pollinators’ you probably picture bugs and bees – but bats play an important role in pollination and seed dispersal as they soar the night sky jumping from plant to plant and tree to tree in search of their next meal.

Florida is home to 13 resident bat species with an additional 7 species considered accidental or occasional visitors. Two resident species, the Florida bonneted bat and the gray myotis, are listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A third species, the tricolored bat, is currently proposed to be listed as federally endangered by USFWS. We can all do our part to help conserve bats by avoiding disturbing bats during hibernation and maternity seasons and preserving natural roosts like tree cavities, caves, snags (dead trees), palm fronds, and even Spanish moss – you can even build your own bat house to help give nearby populations a home away from your home!
