Roy Allela, a 25-year-old engineer and innovator from Kenya, has developed a revolutionary pair of gloves that facilitate improved communication between individuals who are deaf and those who do not understand sign language. The groundbreaking Sign-IO gloves effectively convert sign language gestures into spoken words.

The gloves designed by Allela incorporate sensors placed on each finger, capable of detecting the precise positioning and degree of flexion of the fingers. By establishing a Bluetooth connection with an Android phone, the gloves interact with the text-to-speech feature, enabling the translation of hand movements into audible speech.

The motivation driving the creation of the Sign-IO gloves stems from Allela's experience of having a young niece who is deaf. Since neither Allela nor his family was proficient in sign language, they often encountered challenges communicating effectively and consistently with her.

Lloyd Lionel Gaines (born March 10, 1912 – disappeared April 27, 1939) was the plaintiff in Gaines v. Canada (1938), one of the most important early court cases in the 20th-century civil rights movement. After being denied admission to the University of Missouri School of Law because he was African American, and refusing the university's offer to pay for him to attend a neighboring state's law school that had no racial restriction, he filed suit. The SCOTUS ruled in his favor, holding that the separate but equal doctrine required that Missouri either admit him or set up a separate law school for African Americans.
He was born in Mississippi, his family moved to St. Louis. He graduated first in a class of fifty from Vashon High School. After winning a $250 scholarship, he went to college. He graduated with honors and a BA in history from Lincoln University. He was elected as president of the senior class and a brother in the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. While the case was pending, he enrolled in graduate school at the University of Michigan. He received a MA in Economics.
He has been honored by the University of Missouri School of Law and the state. The Black Culture Center at the University of Missouri and a scholarship at its law school are named for him and another African American student denied admission. He was posthumously granted an honorary law degree. The state bar granted him a posthumous law license. A portrait of him hangs at the University of Missouri law school.
In January 1939 he addressed an NAACP meeting in St. Louis, stating that he was “ready, willing and able to enroll in the law department at the University in September and had the fullest intention of doing so.” In April 1939 he traveled to Kansas City to speak at an NAACP meeting. On April 27 he traveled to Chicago. He dropped out of sight. Numerous efforts were made to locate him. He was last seen leaving a fraternity house in Chicago.
He made an impact to the struggle of African Americans to eliminate state-sanctioned segregation. His case was the first in a long line of SCOTUS decisions that led to Brown v. Board of Education.
