My son's 6th grade science class, requires them to write a brief paper about a black scientist. He decided to write about Mary Jackson, the first African-American, female mathematician and aerospace engineer, to work at the NASA Langley Research Center. Born April 9th, 1921 in Hampton, VA. She attended Hampton University where she earned bachelor's degrees in mathematics and physical science. In 2019, Jackson was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and in 2021, the Washington, D.C. headquarters of NASA was renamed the Mary W. Jackson NASA Headquarters. Part of her life story was depicted in the amazing film "Hidden Figures".
