According to the World Health Organization, “Everyone, if they live long enough, will experience at least one eye condition in their lifetime that will require appropriate care.” An estimated 2.2 billion people, or a quarter of the world’s population, live with visual impairment or blindness. In the town of Kinondo in Kenya, multiple organizations came together to provide vision care during World Blindness Month. *Medical gas lighting & budget cuts*

For our October episode, correspondent Zaakirah Muhammad (Slide 1 wearing purple shirt and glasses), interviewed Oklahoma State Rep. John Waldron (Slide 2 wearing striped shirt, suit jacket and tie flanked with Americana themed bunting, Uncle Sams hats, and Democratic donkeys), a former teacher who is fighting for inclusive education for students with disabilities.
She also interviewed Alana Mbanza (Slide 3 Wearing Long sleeves off white top and black plants, With LED Lights behind her) CEO & founder of Empower MS—a wellness company supporting women, especially Black women, living with multiple sclerosis (MS). Diagnosed after years of medical mystery, Alana is passionate about equitable healthcare and raising the need for more research, access to specialists, the importance of education and supporting the fight for equitable healthcare.

FOCUS: BLACK OKLAHOMA

Focus: Black Oklahoma airs the 3rd Thursday of each month at noon and is rebroadcast the 3rd Friday of each month at 8:00pm on KWGS, 89.5FM. Get archived, podcast-able shows here, or through the NPR One app.

In the spirit of the remarkable people who faced down Jim Crow to found Black Wall Street–and on the eve of the centennial of the Tulsa Race Massacre which turned their prosperity into rubble–an historic and timely new show is coming to Public Radio Tulsa beginning February 2020.

Focus: Black Oklahoma brings the voice of Black Oklahoma back to mainstream broadcast media for the first time in more than 30 years. This one hour news and current events program seeks to inform the public through stories and interviews, engage the community through lively discussion, and spotlight local artists and creators.

Topics include politics, law, business, education, technology, family, health, spirituality, arts and culture, sports, and more–anything relevant to Oklahoma’s Black community. Focus: Black Oklahoma is produced in partnership by Public Radio Tulsa, the Tulsa Artist Fellowship, the Tulsa Community Foundation and Tri-City Collective.
