You guessed it!

This famous quote is “Carpe Diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.” from the film Dead Poets Society which tells the story of a teacher who seeks to inspire his students through poetry. The film was released June 9th of 1989, written by Tom Schulman and directed by Peter Weir.

The iconic line is spoken by teacher Mr. Keating played by Robin Williams as he explains to his English class the importance of not waiting until it's too late to start living life, by then reinforcing to the boys that finding your voice is a key component as well. However, this line has also been known to encourage the audiences of young and old to seize the day in their lives.

How have the groundbreaking special effects of Star Wars impacted visual effects today?

44 years ago, the galaxy-filled action-packed film Star Wars made its grand debut in 1977. The film is known for its heroic characters and unforgettable battles against their resistant enemies from The Dark Side but is also backed largely by its impressive special effects.

Filmmaker George Lucas took the work of creating special effects very seriously since at the time CGI was a new emerging technology, he knew it was going to take some strong determination to get the job done. Getting creative, Lucas took various miniature space figures along with animation and computer-controlled motion photography to achieve the look he was going for. This served as a huge step for CGI artists and became the building blocks for creating the Star Wars universe digitally. Utilizing Lucas’s motion capture techniques, artists are no longer held back by the physicality of it all. Ultimately giving them the range to progress in visual effects exponentially as we see in current films today.

Since then, Star Wars has become a multi-million-dollar franchise, ranging from prequels, toys, books, and television series. The legacy that George Lucas left behind is one that is unforgettable and serves as a constant reminder that hard work and determination can take one to new heights unimaginable.

How can the media affect positive change?

Renowned conservationist and media pioneer, Ted Turner, has crafted a legacy in creating awareness in our global community for better international relations and environmental stewardship.

For example, he created an animated television series called Captain Planet and the Planeteers which focused on educating young children on the importance of conserving the planet. He saw how crucial it was to include a younger generation in the fight to save the earth. In the CNN International documentary, Ted Turner: Captain Planet, he’s quoted saying “I’m really proud of Captain Planet… we can’t win without the young people and we can’t lose with them”.

Beyond the animated series, the mission continues with the Captain Planet Foundation, spearheaded by Turner’s daughter Laura Turner Seydel. The foundation has helped fund various environmental projects and continues to teach children how to help protect the globe.

In this 45-minute doc you can learn about Ted and the profound work he has done plus how Ted is the true Captain Planet. Check the link below for the doc!

What is taking place to ensure that new voices are being heard?

FX’s television series Pose featured its first couple of episodes of the season finale. The series which began in June of 2018 touches on the ball culture in New York City in the ’80s; as well as the rising AIDS crisis. Pose beautifully embodies the glitz, glam, and performance as a direct expression of what makes ball culture so unique.

Series regular Mj Rodriguez, who plays Blanca touches on the visibility of these stories saying, ”Pose opened up a lot of space to see through five different women on a television screen… a trans woman can be a mother and she can raise resilient children”. (The Deadline Podcast)

The show continues to mold and shape the stories of trans women, followed by what lies behind, which is a strong familial bond that keeps everyone together. Throughout each episode, viewers watch as characters break new bounds living in a time where LGBTQ+ individuals are looked at as less than. Pose stands as the only show with the most transgender actors to be cast, opening a door for new voices to be heard!

To learn more about Pose check it out streaming now on Netflix and every Sunday at 10 EST on FX.

How do our fears drive our actions?

41 years ago, Stanley Kubrik released his bone-chilling film, The Shining. The film follows the journey of a family as they take on the responsibility of upkeeping a hotel for the winter months, only to find that later on they are trapped due to a snowstorm and that the lodge is haunted.

This scene shows a conflicted Danny as he has a vision about two twin girls about his age who coerce him into playing with them but quickly see’s their uncanny ending. Calming himself, he speaks to his imaginary friend Tony as he cycles away.

The irony of the film to today is not lost. Just as this family was trapped inside with no way of outsider contact, it is oddly familiar to the pandemic our world is currently facing. The Torrance family faced scary and unpredictable events, forcing them to overcome their fear through their love for each other and the determination to live. Hopefully, we will all be able to pedal past the scary part and find a way out, together.

What effect does representation have in the awards industry?

Renowned actor Sidney Poitier made history in 1964 when he took home an Oscar award for Best Actor with his role as Homer Smith in the film Lilies of the Field. This made him the very first black person to win in the Best Actor category, accompanying Hattie McDaniel’s win in 1940 with her role in Gone with the Wind for Supporting Actor.

Poitier’s win set a huge precedent for black actors who would follow him years later; not only that but he shaped the way he was perceived as a black actor by turning down roles that only fed the adverse nature of black stereotypes. This allowed him to have freedom in the way that he was perceived and how future black actors and actors of color would be considered for roles in the future.

What lengths should a nation of people go in order to prove their diligence?

This is what ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ provides the answer to as it is currently up for Best Picture in this year's 93rd Academy Awards. The film was released in 2020 and focuses largely on the court hearing of the 1968 riots that transpired outside of the DNC (Democratic National Convention).

It further tackles the idea of how powerful miscommunication can be as actor Sacha Baron Cohen says, “It’s about the potential lethal nature of lies. That lies can kill when leaders lie — people dying was the lies of the Vietnam War and the lies that the protesters, not the politicians, were the threat. And so, we saw that the attack on the Capitol was based on a big lie, which was that Trump won the election and that ends up leading to violence.”

The film sends a very indicative message to viewers today of how much more important it is to continue to fight the battle of truth, especially in a time where injustices run rampant and is all dependent on the people coming together to declare what is right.

20 years ago, Monster’s Ball, produced by Lee Daniels and starring Halle Berry, premiered at the 2001 AFI Fest.

In 2002 Halle Berry won the Oscar nomination for Best Actress in the film Monster’s Ball, which became a historical win as Berry was the only African American actress in the category.

In a recent interview Berry expressed her gratitude soon followed by conflict of thought as she says, “Was that an important moment, or was it just an important moment for me?’ I wanted to believe it was so much bigger than me. It felt so much bigger than me, mainly because I knew others should have been there before me and they weren’t.”

Halle Berry holds the only win for Best Actress as a black woman. After 20 years, will she still be alone?

Halle Berry’s 2002 win at the Academy Awards was a historic moment. When presenter Russell Crowe opened the envelope and read Berry’s name for her performance in “Monster’s …
