RIP Jack DeJohnette. One of the most innovative drummers of the last century, his work with Miles Davis (including on the iconic “Bitches Brew”), Herbie Hancock, and Keith Jarrett helped shape the sound of modern jazz. A true original and gifted improvisor—his playing was as expressive as it was explosive. If you follow the evolution of jazz fusion, you know how deep his influence runs. Jack DeJohnette has passed at the age of 83. He will be missed, though the music lives on.

RIP Ace Frehley. The founding lead guitarist and iconic Spaceman of KISS has passed away at the age of 74. Ace’s swagger and showmanship made him standout even within the theatrical and explosive world of KISS. His electrifying solos often turning KISS hits into classics that bedroom guitarists (and air guitarists) would endlessly study and perform. His influence can be heard across generations of players from the worlds of hard rock, heavy metal (the late Pantera shredder, Dimebag Darrell, had Ace’s face tattooed on his chest) and even many alt-rock players that emerged in the ‘90s. Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) shared that Ace was his first guitar hero. Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready shared that he modeled the solo on the band’s first hit single, “Alive,” on Ace’s solo from KISS’ “She.” May Ace’s songs, solos and larger-than-life presence continue to influence and inspire generations to come.

RIP D’Angelo. The artist, whose birth name is Michael Eugene Archer, has passed away at the age of 51 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

His label, RCA, shared a statement. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of D’Angelo. He was a peerless visionary who effortlessly blended the classic sounds of soul, funk, gospel, R&B, and jazz with a hip-hop sensibility. A known perfectionist, D’Angelo released 3 albums that were widely celebrated as masterpieces by both the music community and his beloved fans around the world. He was heavily awarded and critically acclaimed for his talents. D’Angelo’s songwriting, musicianship, and unmistakable vocal styling has endured and will continue to inspire generations of artists to come. Our hearts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”
