Fred Bears Ten Commandments
1. Don't step on anything you can step over.

2. Don't look for deer; look for movement (and remember, it's what they're looking for, too).

3. Always approach downwind. In the cool of the day, move uphill; in the heat of the day, move downhill.

4. The best camouflage pattern is called, "Sit down and be quiet!" Your grandpa hunted deer in a red plaid coat. Think about that for a second.

5. Take only the gear to the field that allows you to hunt longer, harder, and smarter.

6. A rainstorm isn't a reason to quit the hunt. It's a reason to stay.

7. Camouflage your appearance, your sound and your scent.

8. Be sure of your shot. Nothing is more expensive than regret.

9. Hunt where the deer actually are, not where you'd imagine them to be.

10. Next year's hunt begins the minute this season's hunt ends

(Fred Bear did not in fact write these, however they're great advice!)

South Carolina deer hunters keep an eye on your mailbox, deer tags should be arriving soon!

Deer hunters who have an annual or three-year hunting license and big game permit, combination license or sportsman license, which will be valid on August 15 should automatically receive a base set of deer tags.

Additionally, lifetime, senior, gratis, disability and Catawba license holders that previously requested deer tags will continue to automatically receive a free base set of tags this year, and into the future. These license type holders who did not automatically receive tags last year must request them to be added to the automatic fulfillment list.

Youth license holders must still request their free base set of tags each year.

Keep in mind, around 200,000 sets of tags are being printed and mailed. To allow adequate time for tags to reach you, please wait until at least August 10 before inquiring with licensing at 803-734-3833 about the status of your tags.

Deer tags will also be available over-the-counter beginning Monday, August 8 at SCDNR offices located in Charleston, Clemson, West Columbia (Farmers Market), Florence, Aynor and York. For contact information, visit: https://www.dnr.sc.gov/admin/phone.html

To check hunting license status or privileges, visit: https://gooutdoorssouthcarolina.com/

For additional harvest opportunities, additional antlerless tags or antler-restricted buck tags can be purchased at https://gooutdoorssouthcarolina.com/. Please allow 7-10 days for tags to arrive in the mail.

There are no significant changes to tags or the tagging system from last year. Please remember that ALL deer in South Carolina must be immediately tagged before moving from the point of kill.

We are thrilled to report that the M/V Coastal Venture is scheduled to be added to the South Carolina Memorial Reef tomorrow, Wednesday June 1st, 2022. This enormous effort would not have been possible without the generosity of many donors and the Stevens Towing Company, Inc. crew. Current projections indicate that she will sink sometime between 9 AM and Noon. Please join us offshore as we celebrate this new addition of critical habitat for various marine species, all while memorializing the many loved ones we’ve lost in the sport fishing community. The deployment will occur in the center of the 5x6 square mile box for the Charleston Deep Reef.

Thanks to the kindness and understanding of the folks at Stevens Towing Company, we are able to deploy the vessel while fundraising efforts are still underway. Please help us close the gap and meet our goal!

A basketball in my hands is worth about $19. A basketball in Michael Jordan's hands is worth about $33 million.

It depends whose hands it's in.

A baseball in my hands is worth about $6. A baseball in Mark McGwire's hands is worth about $19 million.

It depends whose hands it's in.

A tennis racket is useless in my hands. A tennis racket in Venue Williams' hands is a Championship Winning.

It depends whose hands it's in.

A rod in my hands will keep away a wild animal. A rod in Moses' hands will part the mighty sea.

It depends whose hands it's in.

A sling shot in my hands is a kid's toy. A sling shot in David's hand is a mighty weapon.

It depends whose hands it's in.

Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in my hands is a couple of fish sandwiches. Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in God's hands will feed thousands.

It depends whose hands it's in.

Nails in my hands might produce a birdhouse. Nails in Jesus Christ's hands will produce salvation for the entire world.

It depends whose hands it's in.

As you see now, it depends whose hands it's in. So put your concerns, your worries, your fears, your hopes, your dreams, your families and your relationship in God's hands because...

It depends whose hands it's in.

Trying new loads in your rifle is always a good idea—you might discover that your groups shrink to a satisfying ragged hole by experimenting this way. But the cost of a box of premium ammo is significant. Here's one way to vet whether a box is potentially worth investing in.

Fly fishing for winter steelhead might seem like a fool's errand—that is, until you feel the jolt of these powerful fish.

The South Carolina quail season traditionally kicks off on the Monday before Thanksgiving, which of course is...today! And is there a better way to start Thanksgiving week than with a quail hunt? The answer to that is no, there isn't a better way to start Thanksgiving week than with a quail hunt...

We've got a lot of QF members in the Palmetto State helping bring back the whistle, and here's wishing all our South Carolina members a safe and happy quail opener!

And if you'd like to read a little more about bobwhite quail conservation in South Carolina, check out this 2019 story from the pages of the Quail Forever Journal.

THE LEGEND of the SPANISH MOSS ❤️

There’s an old, old legend, that’s whispered by Southern folks, About the lacy Spanish moss that garlands the great oaks.

A lovely princess and her love, upon their wedding day,
Were struck down by a savage foe amidst a bitter fray.

United in death they were buried, so the legends go,
'Neath the oak’s strong, friendly arms, protected from their foe.

There, as was the custom, they cut the bride’s long hair with love, And hung it’s shining blackness on the spreading oak above.

Untouched, undisturbed it hung there, for all the world to see, And with the years, the locks turned gray and spread from tree to tree.
