The last 15 years Dolores County with surrounding counties, had been working to propose an NCA for the lower Dolores River, with surrounding parties dropping out of the discussions and planning at various times. This bill finally made it to Congress this past January - where it sits, unsigned, awaiting introduction likely combined in some larger land bill, with representatives indicating it may get signed by the end of this year.
Better late than never, but these maneuvers for land and water are urgent to be addressed. Hopefully more are now aware of how important participation is for everyone.

Another hot and 'hazy' day - wildfires across the west are contributing to the smoke in our air.

Hot temperatures will continue over eastern Utah and western Colorado under hazy and smokey skies. Those sensitive to heat or bad air quality should take precautions and stay inside if possible. A few thunderstorms will threaten the Southern Colorado mountains again this afternoon with gusty outflow winds and lightning. Moisture arrives late tomorrow but will bring little relief from the heat.

Secretary of State Jena Griswold Announces No Change in Outcome in Colorado House District 58 Race

Denver, CO – Today, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold announced that the mandatory recount of Colorado’s Republican primary race for House District 58 is complete. The recount confirmed that Larry Don Suckla is the winner of the race.

“The mandatory recount for House District 58 is complete and has confirmed the results of the race with just a three-vote margin,” said Secretary of State Jena Griswold. “I commend the election workers in the eight counties in House District 58 for conducting this recount.”

The final vote tallies as determined by the recounts can be found below:

A statutorily-mandated recount was required for the race for the Republican primary race for House District 58 due to the narrow vote margin between the winning and losing candidates. C.R.S. 1-10.5-101 states, “a recount of any election contest shall be held if the difference between the highest number of votes cast in that election contest and the next highest number of votes cast in that election contest is less than or equal to one-half of one percent of the highest vote cast in that election contest.”

After canvass boards confirmed that the difference in votes cast between the winning and losing candidates fell below 0.5%, Secretary Griswold ordered a mandatory recount for the race on July 15, 2024.

Colorado’s House District 58 is comprised of six complete counties, as well as parts of Delta and Montezuma County. The six complete counties are Dolores, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray, and San Miguel.

Recent reports continue to expand on the zebra mussel invasion and how that could affect now, the Colorado River.
"Officials have made a shocking discovery in the Colorado River that could destroy the local economy.

The dreaded zebra mussel was detected during routine testing in July. The finding threatens to wreak havoc on native fish populations, water infrastructure, irrigation systems, and drinking water supplies.

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Aquatic Nuisance Species team stumbled upon the invasive species in the Government Highline Canal near Clifton by collecting a plankton sample on July 1.

They found a single zebra mussel veliger, only visible under a microscope, lurking in the water which experts are calling 'devastating,' The Denver Gazette reported.

They then found more after collecting further plankton samples in the Colorado River on July 8."

Quite the water dump over the weekend! Perhaps a little dry spot today Monday.

Much drier and warmer conditions will be seen across much of the area today as drier air continues to move in from the north. Moisture will remain pooled across southwest Colorado and along the central divide mountains where storms are more likely to fire. Expect gusty winds, small hail and brief heavy rain with storms particularly across the southern San Juans and southwest Colorado valleys. Temperatures will heat up in this dry period through mid week with a return towards triple digits for the lower desert valleys. Moisture and storm coverage potentially increase late Thursday into Friday following this drier period.

Stormy day on tap as a disturbance moves through in addition to increased moisture resulting in more scattered to widespread coverage of showers and thunderstorms. Again anticipate high terrain to be favored initially with spread into lower valleys late in the day. Gusty outflow winds, lightning, brief heavy rain and small hail all remain possible. Temperatures will continue to be near to above normal. A downturn in storm activity is expected this weekend into next week as drier air moves in from the north.
