Can our local elected officials really be this incompetent? Maybe they can blame it on a "sloped roof" like the U.S. Secret Service? 🤔

Sure wish Bill was still here to shine a light on recent developments... 'cause we all know he'd be right on it.

Bill may be gone but he's not forgotten. One thing about him, he liked having his photo taken and videos of his activities. I believe it was part of his gregarious nature but also because he knew he likely wouldn't be around as long as he would have liked.

I think this was his way of preserving a bit of himself for those who appreciated him in life. Pretty insightful when you stop and think about it. I'm glad he did.

Bill always loved mingling with the firemen and ambulance crews. He was in his element during the Independence Day festivities and definitely would've enjoyed himself tonight.

Watched the fireworks tonight at Wilson Park... the city put on a top drawer display. Just short of 30 minutes non-stop and rapid fire. Nice turn-out and a good time was had by all.

I did miss having Bill Raines with us for the first time this year. He was a hoot during public gatherings such as this and was always along with us for the fireworks show. Hope he was looking down and enjoying it from above.

The Indiana State Board of Accounts has found that former Oolitic Town Clerk-Treasurer, Jessica Staggs failed to deposit more than $70,000 in utility payments made by the citizens and businesses of Oolitic, IN during her term. The investigators attributed her actions to "misfeasance, malfeasance, and nonfeasance".

During her term in Oolitic, Staggs was elected as the Auditor of Lawrence County, IN but recently resigned that position. It should be noted that Bill Raines authored several articles here at the LC Zephyr indicating that there may be as much as $5-6.,000,000 (or more) in public funds unaccounted for here in Lawrence County.

I wish Bill were still here for many reasons, reporting on this story being one of them. He was all over this from the start and penned several articles concerning these events while other local "news outlets" largely ignored/buried it. He was always careful not to publish rumors, many of which were solid and now appear to be true, but was waiting for the day when he could publish established facts. It's a shame that he's not here to keep us all informed... as we all know he would have.

I'm certainly no journalist nor reporter but in keeping with Bill's memory I decided to at least post something concerning these events that Bill waited so patiently to see develop.

Hopefully someone will take up the cause here In our county and keep We The People informed. All the time, not just when it suits the Local Syndicate's agenda.

As of yet, no decision has been made as to the ultimate fate of The Lawrence County Zephyr. Until that time though, I thought I'd make the occasional post here as a tribute to Bill and to help keep his memory alive in the minds of his friends and followers.

This enterprise was Bill's passion, as most of you know, and a big reason for living while fighting his serious health issues. My hope is that it goes on in one form or another. I'm sure Bill would've wanted that as well.

Thanks to everyone for faithfully supporting him in his final years,

Very nice tribute to Bill Raines, penned by Bob Bridge. Spot on, Billy will be missed... and is already.

p.s. As Bob Bridge says at the end of this article, when it came to writing the news "he made errors". But, I want to add that the errors Bill made were almost always spelling or grammatical... VERY seldom did he make factual errors. Not often that you find even so-called "trained journalists" who take the pains that Bill did to ensure the facts are accurate. And all of this while dealing with nearly constant pain and "chemo fog".

I, for one, am very proud of the man. As Bob obviously is as well.

FAREWELL, BILLY RAINES

By Bob Bridge, Columnist

Billy Raines was an independent individual, a somewhat solitary soul.
Bill Raines

Though Paul Anka’s song “My Way” automatically fosters an image of Frank Sinatra, Billy also marched to the beat of a different drummer.

He worked at Kroger and Walmart and served as a volunteer firefighter for several different departments. More recently, he reported news for WBIW before starting his own social media company, The Zephyr.

Billy was a tireless worker, endeavoring to provide viewers in Bedford and beyond with his words and images regarding events transpiring throughout the region.

One afternoon he joined me for lunch and offered me a job. I smiled and explained I was happily retired. He said he thought my human interest columns could provide additional traffic for the Zephyr and he was willing to pay.

I declined the compensation but told him I planned to write one piece a week for my friends on Facebook. I gave him permission to reprint those columns.

Billy was appreciative and always respectful. He was scant on professional skills and struggled with spelling and grammar. When friends suggested he add a proofreader, he merely smiled and shrugged his shoulders.

What Billy lacked in journalistic expertise often was overlooked or forgiven because the guy with the contagious smile was obviously a tireless worker and determined to provide news to his beloved community.

Yes, he made errors. But, what human hasn’t?

Make no mistake, Billy and his Zephyr will be missed.

Thanks, buddy.

It is my sad duty to inform the loyal readers of The Lawrence County Zephyr that Bill Raines, owner and editor of The Zephyr and citizen journalist, passed into glory this afternoon at approximately 3pm.

He will be sadly missed but please know that next to serving his God, serving his page followers and the citizens of Lawrence County was his greatest joy in life.

Thanks to all of you for supporting Bill in all of his endeavors.
