In 2019, an Indian High Court ruling declared that all citizens in the state of Haryana were declared persons in loco parentis (in place of a parent), enabling them to act as guardians for all nonhuman animals in the state of Haryana.

With this decision, India takes another big step forward in the global struggle for recognition and protection of nonhuman rights.
