We might make big promises- especially to God. But when we find ourselves in a difficult situation where our promises matter most, can we uphold them? Jesus knows that sometimes our talk is bigger than our action. And sometimes He gives us opportunities to see where our words get ahead of us to gently remind us to choose our promises carefully.

🛐 PRAYER

Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness. Even though I have let You down, Your promises never fail. Teach me to be wise in my words, so that I may make only the promises that I can keep. And give me the power to persevere and see my promises through, even when it seems difficult or impossible. In Jesus’ name.., amen!

God knows our hearts. He knows not only what we ask, but why we ask. And when we ask with impure motives, seeking God only as a means to achieving our selfish desires, He gently corrects us. It is God’s desire that our hearts would turn to Him, for His sake, and be satisfied with Him. And in turn, He helps us to overcome our selfish desires as we set our minds on heavenly things.

🛐 PRAYER

Lord, too often my own desires and priorities get in the way of truly seeking You. Please transform my heart and renew my mind so that I may be more like You. Help me to put away selfish ambitions and lustful pursuits, and instead desire more of what is true, good, and right. In Jesus’ name.., amen!

Whether we’re assembling something, playing a game, or doing our jobs, we have an easier time following instructions if we understand them. The same is true on our spiritual journeys. We might stumble through some of God’s commands on our own, but when we seek and receive understanding, obedience springs from our hearts, and not just from a set of instructions.

🛐 PRAYER

Lord, thank You for Your word and its guidance in my life. Grant me wisdom and understanding, so that by learning Your word I may know You better. Give me insight to understand the heart of love and truth behind all of Your instructions, so that I may walk more closely with You. In Jesus’ name.., amen!

When we ask for instructions and advice, we do so with the intent of following them. But when we hear Jesus’ teaching and fail to do it, we are like someone who tossed away the directions we’ve been given. And just like the house built on sandy land, we find that when we build up our lives without following Jesus’ direction, our structures will ultimately collapse.

Lord, You have given me Your word, Your example, and Your Spirit. You have made Your truth and Your instructions abundant and clear. Teach me to rely on all that You say and all that You teach so that everything I build may be built according to Your plans and by Your power. In Jesus’ name.., amen!

We all have plans and ambitions. And it’s good that we pray before putting our plans into action. One of the ways that God answers prayer is through the counsel of other believers. So let us seek the counsel of the wise and faithful among us, for the knowledge, experience, and discernment of the body of believers is greater than the mind of just one.

God, that You for calling me not only to Yourself but to the body of believers. Thank You for my local church, and for the wise teachers and friends that You have provided for me. Help me to rely on them when I am faced with big decisions, so that together we may seek You in prayer. And give me ears to hear Your wisdom in their words as You speak through them. The disciples must have been confused. Jesus was soon leaving, He said, but the Spirit could come to be their Helper. In this verse, we finally begin to understand. Just as we see God when we see Jesus, we hear both when we listen to the Spirit. So, we can rely on the Spirit to lead us in God’s truth according to His Word, as promised by the Son.

Father, Son, and Spirit. Your nature is a mystery that I may never fully understand. Still, I thank You for revealing Yourself to me. Thank You for the love of the Father, which is over all things. Every time God answers our prayers, it encourages us to keep coming back to Him, to keep calling on Him, and to depend on Him more. Whenever we face doubt about whether or not God hears us, we need only to remember His faithfulness, which He has shown over and over. And we are assured that He will hear us every time we call out to Him.

Lord God, You are steadfast and faithful. You have never been too busy to hear me, and my cries are never too big for You to handle or too small for You to bother with. The idea of eating God’s word might seem a little strange. Obviously, we shouldn’t be ingesting the pages of the Bible. But when we take in God’s word through reading and through hearing, it is like food for our souls. Just as the nutrients we digest move to our bones, muscles, and other cells to nourish and strengthen us, the word of God moves throughout us to bring joy to our hearts and renewal to our minds.

Lord, thank You for Your word. I pray that as I read Your word, as I hear the sermons of wise teachers, and as I meditate on what I’ve learned, Your word would have a nourishing effect on my life. How do we serve God? Sometimes, we make this question harder than it needs to be. We serve God by serving others in whatever way we are able to do so. Whatever skill, talent, or gift God has given us, He has given us to use for His glory. Whatever people God has placed in our midst are the people with whom we are called to share His grace.

God, thank You for claiming me as Your own and for filling me with Your Holy Spirit. Please give me wisdom to understand how You’ve equipped me to serve You in simple ways. Give me eyes to see the opportunities that I have to share Your love and grace with others, and give me the strength to use my gifts and talents to carry out the tasks You’ve placed before me. And in doing so, we turn people away from the God who invites them in. Let us be people that welcome others as they are so that Jesus can do His transformative work in their lives.

Lord, forgive me for the times that I’ve dismissed others or turned them away. For I know that You love all people, just as You loved me and rescued me while I was still in sin. Gracious Lord, for too long I have cherished sin in my heart. I have held on to my pride and desires instead of seeking the fullness of Your love. Our world is fallen, and we are faced with evil on a daily basis. And though we cannot escape evil, we are called to not participate in evil. Yet even those who are lost recognize what is true and honest. And when we choose the path of obedience, love, and peace, doing right even in the face of evil, God’s grace is revealed in us.

As a parent, have you ever told your children that certain people are a ‘bad influence’ on them? If so, then this proverb should resonate with you. Even our Heavenly Father warns us not to follow the ways of the bad influence. Each step on a wrong path leads further from the true path and closer to ruin. So we must be watchful to avoid even the first step down such a road.

Father God, please watch over my steps as I walk with You. Teach me to walk in all wisdom and truth. God said ‘I Am that I Am.’ What a powerful name! For only God exists in and of Himself. Of course, we exist, too. But we were created, existing only because God willed it so. But existence is inherent in God’s nature. He has no beginning and no end. He was, and is, and will always be. And when we meditate on the name ‘I Am,’ we are reminded of just how magnificent our God is!

God, You are the great I Am. There was none before You, and there will be none after You. You are the Alpha and Omega. I praise You for Your infinite power, and I thank You for creating me. To believe in Jesus is to believe in God. As Christians, we understand this truth, but this statement is no mere teaching moment. Jesus cries these words out in frustration. Why? Because people who devoted their lives to following God refused to acknowledge Him. But fear kept them silent. So Jesus is calling on them to proclaim what they already say they believe.

Father, forgive me for the times that I have failed to acknowledge You. Give me the boldness and confidence to not be ashamed to proclaim Your name. God promises to supply our needs and strengthen us each day. He may not shower us with excess, and we may not know today how He will provide for tomorrow, but we can always trust in His faithful promise.

The disciples were rightly surprised that Jesus could tell the storm to stop raging and that the storm would listen! When we are tempted to make Jesus ‘just a man,’ let us be reminded of this moment, where Jesus reveals His divine power and authority by commanding nature itself.

Jesus, You are Lord over all things. Everything was created by Your hands, and You have all authority in Heaven and on Earth. His creation of us in His image and His design of our complexity reveal His grandeur. God is not a small, human idea made by our finite minds. He is infinite and above all.

When the word of God falls on your ears, how do you receive it? That’s the question that the parable of the sower wants us to consider. It takes a heart tilled by Jesus to receive the word in a way that it will grow. Evidence of God’s word in us will be seen not just in our understanding and knowledge of the word, but in our application and doing of the word.

Lord, thank You for Your word and for all of the truth and wisdom that it contains. Please prepare my heart to receive your word. Remove the stones from the soil of my heart and the weeds from my life so that I may be ready to hear Your word, understand Your word, and live Your word for the glory of Your name. What can we add to Jesus to make our salvation more complete? Nothing at all. In Jesus, we are fully and perfectly saved. Our victory is already secure because of Jesus. It is in surrender, reverence, and love that we now live, perfected by grace to do the good works of God. Not out of obligation, but out of joy and celebration.

Jesus, thank You for saving me. Thank You for completing the work that I could never finish, and paying the price that I could never afford. With love and gratitude, I accept Your grace as I look ahead to the prize that awaits- victory with You in eternity. We regularly praise God for His righteousness and thank Him for His faithfulness. But today, let’s meditate on what those words mean, and how beautifully they go together. Because God is righteous, He is pure and good in all His ways. He will never act with evil intent because evil is contrary to His nature. And because He is faithful, His goodness never fails. He never forgets us or misses an opportunity to show His love for us.

Gracious God, today I just want to praise You and acknowledge how wonderful You are. You have proven Your love over and over by all of the good things that You have given me. It was pride that first brought sin into the world, and pride that drives every selfish decision we make when we seek to be God’s of our own lives. Even as Christians, if we forget that we are acting in God’s power and try to use our own strength, we will be reminded swiftly of our limits and our need to rely on Him.

Father, thank You for saving me from my prideful and destructive ways. Your power and Your grace are all that I need. The name ‘Satan’ means ‘accuser.’ He is the one that points the finger at us, charging us with every sin and shortcoming that lies behind us. But we have a powerful advocate in God, who speaks in our defense. He proclaims us innocent by His actions that rescued us from the fire. And Satan is silenced. He has no further argument because God’s forgiveness is complete and absolute.

God, thank You for sending Jesus to save me from my sins and sn**ch me from the fire. I rejoice in the forgiveness and mercy that You have poured out on me. Still, the accuser whispers doubt and tries to turn me back toward my sin. Be my vindication, Lord, and silence my enemy, so that I may move forward in Your righteousness knowing that I am Yours. So when temptation comes, let us recognize it with alert minds and open eyes. In all cases, we must turn away from temptation and toward God, and He will provide a way out for us.

Gracious God, grant me wisdom and discernment to recognize temptation in all its forms. I know that You would never lead me to sin, so when temptation comes, help me to turn away from it. When we just take a speaker at their word, we risk being led astray. So God Has given us His word so that we may search it and hold on to what is true while rejecting what is false.

Lord, thank You for Your word, and thank You for the teachers and leaders that You have placed in my life. Please work through them so that they may be grounded in Your truth and speak only the things that are of You. God’s word is a precious resource for us- but only if we use it. Scripture is a firm foundation for all areas of life- family, work, and community. When we try to build these things up without the wisdom of God’s word, we are vulnerable to the shifting sands and shaky ground of human thinking and feeling. Lasting contentment comes from our unshakeable God, who is faithful in all seasons of life. The best way to show our love for God is to obey Him. When we are walking in step with God, we ourselves are assured of our relationship with Him, and others also see what a life lived in communion with God looks like. But when we ignore God and follow our own way, we not only hurt our witnesses to others, but we invite doubt into our own minds.
