Our Story

Selvyn Tollefsrud was an old, stubborn Norwegian rancher who lived in Spearfish South Dakota. He was a WWII veteran who had earned two Purple Hearts while serving as a gunner’s mate on a PT boat in the Philippines, and a “tremendous storyteller.” He was also an angler and my grandpa.

As a child, we would visit their farm for the fun. Four-wheeler rides, hay stack hide-and-seek, fossil hunting in the riverbed...it was always a special occasion. but as I matured, went to college, my visits to the farm became more infrequent, and solitary. He was a man of few words, so our conversations at his kitchen table would invariably lead to what he knew I loved most...Fishing. He would bring out old magazine and newspaper articles about fish that he had kept for such an occasion. And I’m convinced that he didn’t do it because he enjoyed them so much, but because he knew I did. After he died in 2011, I began to miss our conversations. I missed hearing about his spearfish creek adventures and childhood stories. Not only that, but I also felt regret for not asking him more questions when I had the chance. I know a lot of my family members feel the same way.

In 2017 I created the Fort Knox of fishing stories at fishstories.org. The best and worst sagas, legends, fables, parables, and loose fabrications that anglers, young and old, can tell so well. A preservation system dedicated to angler conversations, stories, voices, advice, wisdom, and experiences that are an integral part to the fishing community and our heritage as anglers. We believe in recording the voices of anglers we care about and preserving their legacies for future generations.
