Indigenous peoples protect 80% of the world’s biodiversity but receive a mere 1% of climate finance. This is why Indigenous voices at COP28 are so critical. There is no solution to the climate crisis without Indigenous peoples and land.

Is COP complicit in the climate crisis? This year, nearly 2,500 Fossil Fuel lobbyists are attending COP, outnumbering nearly every country’s delegation. Sultan Al Jaber, who is the CEO of the UAE’s national oil company and the president of this year’s COP, stated that there is “no science” to support a phaseout of fossil fuels. For these reasons and others, organizations committed to a , like UpRose Bk have questioned participating in COP.

On Day 1 of COP28, Pema Wangmo Lama Mugum, an Indigenous Youth activist from the Mugum Indigenous Nations in Asia, from the National Indigenous Women's Federation - NIWF NEPAL read the International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change opening statement.

“We commit to working with States to implement real solutions based on our knowledge, practices, time-tested sciences, reciprocity with the natural world and Mother Earth, and the full exercise of our rights. Our collective survival is at stake and our children and future generations require action without delay.” ~ Pema Wangmo Lama Mugum, Mugum Indigenous Nations

"With no caribou, we don’t have meat like we used to. We don’t have have fur coating for warmth. This is the coldest place in Alaska, Allakaket.
The Alyeska pipeline went right above us, it went to Bettles and down over to Ambler, but it put us in a little area. In the mid-1970s, when we’d go and check the fishnet, me and my husband, it was a swirling, muddy river.
They were already mining up this way. We put a stop to that when we reported it.
The Ambler Road will destroy our country. It will destroy our animals, fish, waterfowl, berries, trees, and our way of life.”

"Princess Daazhraii Johnson, a member of the Neets’aii Gwich’in, hasn’t been able to fish at her family’s traditional camp on the Yukon River in Alaska for years. Salmon have dwindled with rising temperatures, a consequence of burning fossil fuels. That’s one reason why Johnson was one of thousands of people who took to the streets in New York over the past 24 hours to demand an end to oil, coal, and gas."

On Labor Day, an intimate group of about 100 local climate activists, artists, and Indigenous leaders gathered at the UAF president’s house to witness the culminating presentation from this summer’s dynamic Gath & K’iyh: Listen to Heal workshop program in partnership with Yo-Yo Ma’s Our Common Nature, which explores how culture helps us connect to the natural world. This final event brought in some major players to draw attention to climate impacts to local ecosystems, including world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, drag queen and environmental advocate Pattie Gonia, and singer-songwriter Quinn Christopherson.

The event included original music performed with Yo-Yo Ma and workshop participants, written collaboratively with composers Eli Wasserman and Mato Wayuhi (composer for the hit series Reservation Dogs), with an original poem read by Princess Daazhraii Johnson. Pattie Gonia and Christopherson premiered their new climate anthem “Won’t Give Up (Glacier)” with Yo-Yo Ma.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland has canceled all oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, in a move designed to protect the region and reduce fossil fuel production.

“With today’s action, no one will have rights to drill in one of the most sensitive landscapes on Earth,” Haaland said in an online news conference Wednesday. “Climate change is the crisis of our lifetime. And we cannot ignore the disproportionate impacts being felt in the Arctic. We must do everything within our control to meet the highest standards of care to protect this fragile ecosystem.”

Thankful for all the many tireless Indigenous leaders and allies who worked for this for decades! Thank you to Secretary Deb Haaland and the President Joe Biden for recognizing the importance of Alaska's Arctic Refuge.

“With today’s action, no one will have rights to drill in one of the most sensitive landscapes on Earth,” said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.

• CALL TO ACTION •
There are changes being proposed to the Indian Arts and Craft Act that would greatly damage its protections for Alaska Natives and American Indians and would likely cause more damage by changing what is allowed to be called authentic Alaska Native and American Indian art.

There have only been four in-person listening sessions during busy events for Indigenous peoples. There only one more tribal tribal consultation, the first online, that will be held on August 2, and the last listening session will be again in-person only and held during the Santa Fe Indian Market, yet another unfair choice of timing.

You can take action now by emailing your written comments to [email protected]. Comments will be accepted until Friday, September 1, 2023, at 7:58pm Alaska time.

Thank you to Jenny Irene Miller for generating this carousel and to folks at the Smithsonian Arctic Studies center for bringing this to our attention.

Hundreds lined the shore of Auke Bay on June 10 to welcome voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa under the leadership of Captain and Pwo Navigator Bruce Blankenfeld. Hōkūleʻa approached the traditional lands of the A'aakw Kwaan to the sounds of chanting, singing and drumming at about 2:30pm (AK Time) with 14 crew members aboard, including two from Juneau and two from 90 miles north in Haines, where Hokuleʻa departed at 4:00am. Alaska hosts sent traditional canoes called yaakws to es**rt Hōkūleʻa to her mooring, where she tied up at 3:00pm.

Protocol began as Alaska Native hosts of the Wooshkeetaan and Yaxteitaan clans called out, asking crew members to identify themselves. Crew responded and requested permission to come ashore. Permission was granted.

Brittany Woods-Orrison, Broadband Specialist, said: “Alaska’s rich landscapes, extreme weather, and dispersed population means we have complex challenges in deploying broadband, with some families paying over $1000 for slow, unreliable service. There’s long been a need for a coalition to support collaboration efforts between Indigenous broadband advocates. The Indigenous Connectivity Institute answers that needs: growing a network of advocates, deepening community bonds, and sharing our knowledge. This community has already supported my work and now it’s an honor to welcome friends and partners from across Turtle Island to Alaska for the Indigenous Connectivity Summit 2023 to work together towards a vision of digital equity that will be felt by generations to come.”

The seventh annual Indigenous Connectivity Summit (ICS) takes place in Anchorage, Alaska this week (May 22-24), bringing together Indigenous community members, network operators, researchers, and policymakers with a common goal: to connect Indigenous communities in the United Stat...
