Photo of an 18-Years-old Tina Turner ("Little Ann") in a Nightclub next to a Microphone in 1958.

Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock; November 26, 1939) is an American-born Swiss[a] singer and actress. Widely referred to as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll", she rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Ike and Tina Turner R***e before launching a successful career as a solo performer.

Tina Turner was born in Brownsville, Tennessee. Her family lived in the nearby rural unincorporated community of Nutbush, Tennessee, where her father worked as an overseer of the sharecroppers at Poindexter Farm on Highway 180; she later recalled picking cotton with her family at an early age.

As a young girl, Bullock sang in the church choir at Nutbush's Spring Hill Baptist Church. When she was 11, her mother Zelma ran off without warning. Bullock and her sisters were sent to live with their maternal grandmother, Georgeanna Currie in Brownsville, Tennessee.

As a teenager, Bullock joined both the cheerleading squad and the female basketball team at Carver High School in Brownsville, and "socialized every chance she got". When Bullock was 16, her grandmother died, so she went to live with her mother in St. Louis. She graduated from Sumner High School in 1958.

Turner began her career with Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm in 1957. Under the name Little Ann, she appeared on her first record, "Boxtop", in 1958. In 1960, she was introduced as Tina Turner with the hit duet single "A Fool in Love". The duo Ike & Tina Turner became "one of the most formidable live acts in history". They released hits such as "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "River Deep – Mountain High", "Proud Mary", and "Nutbush City Limits" before disbanding in 1976.

In 1976 and 1977, Turner earned income by appearing on TV shows such as The Hollywood Squares, Donny & Marie, The Sonny & Cher Show and The Brady Bunch Hour.

In October 1981, Rod Stewart attended Turner's show at the Ritz in New York City and invited her to perform "Hot Legs" with him on Saturday Night Live. In November, Turner opened for the Rolling Stones during their 1981 American Tour. Turner's recording of the Temptations' "Ball of Confusion" for the UK production team BEF became a hit in European dance clubs in 1982.

During her second stint at the Ritz, she signed with Capitol Records in 1983. In November 1983, she released her cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" which was produced by B.E.F. It reached several European charts, including No. 6 in the UK. In the US, the song peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 1 on the Hot Dance Club Songs, and No. 3 Hot Black Singles.

Following the single's surprise success, Capitol Records greenlit a studio album. Turner had two weeks to record her Private Dancer album, which was released in May 1984. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 in the United Kingdom. Private Dancer was certified 5× Platinum in the United States, and sold 10 million copies worldwide, becoming her most successful album.

Also in May 1984, Capitol issued the album's second single, "What's Love Got to Do with It"; the song had previously been recorded by the pop group Bucks Fizz. Following the album's release, Turner joined Lionel Richie as the opening act on his tour.

On September 1, 1984, Turner achieved her first and only No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "What's Love Got to Do with It". The follow-up singles "Better Be Good to Me" and "Private Dancer" were both U.S. top 10 hits. Turner culminated her comeback when she won three Grammys at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Award for Record of the Year for "What's Love Got to Do with It". In February 1985, she embarked on her second world tour to support the Private Dancer album. Two nights were filmed at Birmingham, England's NEC Arena and later released as a concert on home video. During this time, she also contributed vocals to the USA for Africa benefit song "We Are the World".

Turner's success continued when she traveled to Australia to star opposite Mel Gibson in the 1985 post-apocalyptic film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. The movie provided her with her first acting role in ten years; she portrayed the glamorous Aunty Entity, the ruler of Bartertown. Upon release, critical response to her performance was generally positive. The film was a global success, grossing more than $36 million in the United States.Turner later received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress for her role in the film. She recorded two songs for the film, "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)" and "One of the Living"; both became hits with the latter winning her a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

In 1993, the semi-autobiographical film What's Love Got to Do with It was released. The film starred Angela Bassett as Tina Turner and Laurence Fishburne as Ike Turner. Turner contributed to the soundtrack for What's Love Got to Do with It, re-recording old songs and several new songs. The single "I Don't Wanna Fight" from the soundtrack was a top 10 hit in the U.S. and UK.

Dianne Patrice Durham (June 17, 1968 – February 4, 2021) was an American artistic gymnast. In 1983, she won the all-around senior title at the women's US National Championships, becoming the first African American athlete to do so. She also won the individual titles for bars, floor and vault, becoming the first American woman to execute a full-twisting layout Tsukahara on vault.

Durham was born in Gary, Indiana. She started gymnastics in 1971 at the age of 3 and trained at Wanda Tomasi’s gymnastics facility in Merrillville, Indiana.

In 1981, after winning the junior elite all-around title at the US National Championships, she moved to Houston, Texas. She was coached by Béla and Márta Károlyi. They had defected from Romania in 1981 and though they had trained the star of the 1976 Olympic gymnastics competition, Nadia Comaneci, they faced their doubts about whether they could succeed outside Romania's state-supported program.

Durham was Béla and Márta Károlyi's first elite athlete in the United States, helping establish their coaching credentials outside of the state-sponsored program of their native Romania, and trained with Mary Lou Retton, who called Durham her "best competition".

Durham successfully defended her junior national all-around title in 1982, and had a breakout performance at the United States Gymnastics Federation international invitation, tying for the all-around title with teammate Kathy Johnson in Durham's first major international meet.

In 1983 she won the senior all-around title at the US National Championships, the first African American in women's gymnastics to take this title.

"People said, you're the first Black -- I'm using 'Black' because 'African American' wasn't a term in my era -- national champion. Do you know that didn't go through my head one time?" Durham told ESPN. "Not one time. Do you know how many people had to tell me that? I could not understand why that was such a humongous deal."

For Durham, that win, although hard-fought, was simply one step on her path toward the Olympics. After injuries and politics prevented her from competing in the 1984 Summer Olympics, Durham retired from competition in 1985.

Prior to her ankle injury at 1984 Olympic Trials, Durham was considered a sure bet for the seven-person team, with her and training partner Mary Lou Retton expected to be a powerful duo for the U.S. at those Los Angeles Games. Durham would’ve been a medal contender – potentially the first black Olympic gymnastics medalist ever. (Luci Collins was the first black gymnast to qualify to the U.S. women’s Olympic team in 1980, but the U.S. boycotted those games.)

Durham took a job coaching with the Karolyis in Houston before eventually relocating to Chicago. She became a gym owner of the Skyline Gymnastics school in Chicago. She also became a national-level judge and a coach.

Unfortunately, Durham passed away on February 4, 2021 at the age of 52 after a short illness.

USA Gymnastics CEO & president Li Li Leung said the organization is “heartbroken.”

“As an icon and trailblazer in our sport, Dianne opened doors for generations of gymnasts who came after her, and her legacy carries on each day in gyms across the country,” Leung said in a statement.

➡POSTHUMOUS USA GYMNASTICS HALL OF FAME PETITION

In response to Gymnastics Now’s request for comment on the petition for Dianne Durham to be posthumously added to the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame, USAG gave the following statement:

“The overwhelming support for inducting Dianne Durham into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame is a testament to her enduring legacy, and we believe that her contributions to our sport are deserving of this recognition. The formal process for nominations and selections to the Hall of Fame includes significant community participation and is set to open next month for the 2021 class. Though USA Gymnastics provides administrative support throughout the nomination process, the organization is not involved in selection decisions. We would, however, support Dianne’s inclusion in the Hall of Fame.”

🌹REMEMBERING JULIUS "SHO'NUFF" CARRY

Julius John Carry III (March 12, 1952 – August 19, 2008) was an American actor. He made his acting debut in the 1979 film Disco Godfather starring Rudy Ray Moore. He played Sho'Nuff in the 1985 martial arts film The Last Dragon. At 6'5" he was perfect for the part. He also acted in the films World Gone Wild and The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh.

Carry appeared primarily in numerous television roles, including Dr. Abraham Butterfield on Doctor, Doctor and the bounty hunter Lord Bowler in The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. He also appeared on shows such as The Jeffersons, Benson, Murphy Brown, Family Matters, Hill Street Blues, 227, A Different World, The Hughleys, Moesha, Cosby, Half & Half, Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place, and Boy Meets World.

Carry grew up in the Lake Meadows neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Carry attended Hales Franciscan High School, where, at age 15, he joined the Spartan Players, an acting group. He discovered a love of acting with the group, performing in plays such as Hamlet and West Side Story. After touring the country with the Spartan Players, Carry joined the Chicago Actors Repertory Company, performing with them for four years. He attended Quincy College, but only for one year. His family encouraged him to move to California and live with his uncle in Los Angeles to "get back on [his] feet."

Once in Los Angeles, Carry entered Loyola Marymount University, where he received a bachelor's degree in film and TV production. He stayed at the university, and completed a master's degree in communication arts.

In the TV series The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. with Bruce Campbell, which aired in 1993 and 1994, Carry played the part of Brisco's one-time rival and fellow bounty hunter Lord Bowler (a.k.a. James Lonefeather), who then became Brisco's best friend and sidekick. Carry also portrayed the main villain Sho'nuff in the film The Last Dragon. Carry's final appearance as an actor was in the season one episode "Eating The Young" on the CBS series The Unit in 2006. He had also guest starred on three episodes of the ABC/Disney sitcom Boy Meets World, once as a college professor and later as Sgt. Alvin Moore, father of series regular Angela Moore (Trina McGee). As a result of Carry's death, the character of Sgt. Moore is revealed to have died as well (off-screen) in the years between Boy Meets World and the second season of its sequel series Girl Meets World, which aired on Disney Channel.

Unfortunately, Carry died at his home in Studio City California on August 19, 2008 of pancreatic cancer at the age of 56. Carry is survived by his wife, Naomi; a brother, Ronald; and his mother, the Rev. Helen Carry.

Taimak, who played Leroy Green in The Last Dragon movie, shared fond memories of the man who had everybody saying the classic line, ”Who’s the baddest m**o in town?” Because Julius was so committed to his role as ‘Sho-nuff,’ he reportedly created tension with Taimak.

According to Taimak, Julius would walk around in costume on the set all the time, never coming out of character. To create authentic tension, Taimak said Julius would walk up to people and stare them down as only ‘Sho’nuff’ could. He would apparently rip stuff off the wall to maintain his mean persona. In a video, Taimak shared how he often laughed at Carry III’s antics to which Julius responded. He also said that Julius constantly pushed his buttons to create anger between them because Julius knew that Taimak didn’t have any animosity toward him in real life, so to get the best out of him on film, Julius created tension on set, with the hopes that it would eventually translate on camera.
