The state’s Demand Management Pilot Program will use around $4 million in state money to compensate farmers who temporarily stop irrigating some of their land. The practice is known as fallowing, and the water they would have normally used for irrigation can stay in the river.

The grant was awarded to Salt Lake City, along with seven other projects that received a total of $8.5 million. All eight projects aim to "protect and enhance" more than 13,000 acres of the Great Salt Lake's wetlands.

“What we found was that reduced stream flow accounts for about two-thirds of the lake volume loss relative to a midcentury average volume, and increasing evaporation accounts for roughly one-third of the historic volume loss."

As warmer weather approaches, migrating swans will pass through Utah as they journey north. If you’d like to see them, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources recommends three prime viewing spots near Great Salt Lake during early March.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources states the first of the dead eared grebes were detected in November of 2024, and test results found most had died from avian influenza.

Between 15,000 and 25,000 birds died, and a spokesperson for DWR said the deaths should not greatly impact the eared grebes population in Utah. Read more: https://bit.ly/4hxopsp

"This is going to be a very long project,” said Zach Renstrom, water district general manager. “It’s going to take 15 to 20 years to complete, but this really will preserve our water for the future. It's going to make us more drought-resistant. It's going to make us more reliant on local water.”

The Utah Rivers Council announced that it is partnering with the Waterkeeper Alliance to form the Great Salt Lake Waterkeeper.

"Mike Schultz, you're out of pocket! Put the lake back on the docket!" some chanted in protest of the House Speaker's comments to FOX 13 News last year where he announced a "pause" on major water legislation. In a recent interview, he defended his stance.

"I think it’s important we take a pause, press pause, let’s go back and review everything we’ve done and make sure that it’s working they were intended to and that we have the right policy on the books," Speaker Schultz, R-Hooper, said.

Home prices in Moab’s Grand County jumped 642% from 1993 to 2023, according to federal data. So when farmland is put up for sale, local farmers have a hard time competing with developers’ pockets.

“Over half of the property we used to farm is not here anymore,” Gary Wilson, a farmer, said. “Every piece of that property is in a housing development.”

If you are still waiting for your Great Salt Lake license plate, be patient. Despite hope that they would be ready by now, they won’t be out for a few more months. The delay is due to new regulations, which also make space for full-color designs.
