Sharon and Michael Stathis had visions of retiring near the beach. The couple had spent decades in South Florida, where Michael owned a construction company. After spending his life building custom dream homes for clients, the time had come for Michael to build a dream home of his own.

The couple recruited Stuart-based designer Ally Whalen for her modern coastal sensibility, and she helped create a truly ephemeral setting on Hutchinson Island with coastal-cool style.

Coffee started purr-colating in Port St. Lucie when the area’s very first cat café opened in June.

The new shop is the creation of local resident Melony Zaravelis, who first encountered the creative concept during a visit to Omaha in 2021. She was intrigued, and after checking out about a dozen more similar businesses, she left behind her full-time job as an accountant to open The Kitty Cup.

Read on about the shop, as well as its partnerships with the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast and the Humane Society of St. Lucie County, here: https://www.stuartmagazine.com/things-to-do/around-town-things-to-do/a-cup-of-love-at-port-st-lucies-first-cat-cafe/

A burst of color greets visitors who have the good fortune to find their way into Stuart Vintage, a new boutique specializing in vintage home decor. The shop is the brainchild of Alison Manship, who worked at Matilda’s for 14 years before deciding to open her own boutique earlier this year.

Most Floridians know to keep their pets away from cane toads, as the nonnative species can be toxic to small animals. When the toads become agitated, they can secrete a milky-white toxin from glands located on their shoulders. And if a dog or cat licks or sniffs the substance, it can potentially be fatal.

So what’s the story with these creatures? Read on about these uninvited guests here: https://www.stuartmagazine.com/stuart-life/outdoors/cane-toads-uninvited-guests/

Marla Maples has found her inner peace and joy—and she’s on a mission to spread love and light across the globe. When we spent time with , she offered eight life lessons we're still thinking about:

Know when to let go. “Life is a series of release and then rebuilding, releasing the old and then stepping into the new dreams. It’s important to look within yourself and see what is not serving you—and let go of it.”

Find the lesson. “Instead of saying, ‘Look what happened to me! This is awful,’ try saying, ‘How can I grow through this?’ Take a pause and don’t judge it as being bad. Instead, look at it as an opportunity and ask what you can learn from it.”

Look inward for love. “As humans, we have to keep that love even in difficult situations. When love is a deeper inner journey, we can continue to love even when things in the world make it harder.”

Stuart’s newest hot spot, Stack Burgers & Bourbon, surely lives up to its name. The towering burgers are layered with fixings and sandwiched between light, buttery brioche buns and are truly gravity-defying.

Hello October!

In our first issue of fall, we meet a handful of locals who are staying true to their love of some fairly classic arts—including musician Ben Childs, who plays the hurdy-gurdy. Meet the hurdy-gurdy man himself, and a few other fascinating folks in this month's "Uncommon Artists."

Also in this issue, we sit down with Marla Maples—a beautiful woman, inside and out, who exudes tranquility, and get a preview into this season's beautifully bold hues.

Like a phoenix, new life rises from the ashes following prescribed burns. These controlled fires are intentionally set and closely monitored by a county’s environmental resources department to prevent natural wildfires that could harm our environment and wildlife.

For Stuart native Aiden Natalie, boating and fishing is a way of life—one that he lives proudly on the family 296CC he inherited from his late father, Bill.

Whether it’s working the deck with any number of local fishing teams, helping organize local fishing tournaments, working with local boating manufacturers, or simply fishing for fun with friends, Natalie is deeply entrenched in boating on many levels.

Aboard the beloved Cobia center console, he can do it all.
