New Episode!

This was originally intended as an extension of our Smooth Soul Episode but it’s been like 3 months since my last upload. (Sorry about that)

In this episode we look back at a somewhat forgotten period in The Isley Brothers career that followed the exodus of the younger brothers and Chris Jasper and the death of O’Kelly. Ronnie and Rudolph attempt to pick up the pieces of the band with help from Angela Winbush, who’s career path was also uncertain following an intense split from René Moore just as the duo became hitmakers.

Regular episodes should be returning to the feed shortly!

Hey all. Apologies for the delay in releasing episodes. After 9 months of delays my job is finally letting me work remotely, which will give me the time I need to get back to editing and recording. Thanks for your patience.

15/07/2022

For our handful of fans we are coming back. I have had trouble finding time to edit but my work schedule is changing soon which will give me some more time to dedicate to the show. I still have a backlog of episodes to edit and we’re recording again next week. We’ll see you soon!

Disco’s peak in the seventies was so much more diverse than it’s given credit for. While the yacht rock revival and general music nerdom have changed the minds of many music fans and the musicians involved are often recognized for the virtuosos they were, what’s slightly less acknowledged was just how weird Disco could get. One branch of the Strange Disco tree is it’s ability to be fused with other genres, no matter how disparate. From Calypso to Turkish Folk, Zuhl, Gospel and so much more we explore 12 of these bizarre hybrids

Rumors of the Blues’ death in the 1980s were greatly exaggerated. From the ZZ Top family tree, rumors of a secret Jim Morrison project, The (mostly) hidden hand behind desert rock the eighties blues scene proves it’s much more than middle of the road albums by legacy acts and George Thorogood and still had room for the weird to creep in.

A look into the dying days of glam when denim and leather attempted to overtake the hairspray and assless chaps with an addictive blending of 80's excess with vintage blues rock. A movement that was was ultimately crushed by the changing tides of the 90's but remains one of the brightest creative periods of an oft mocked subgenre.

Inovations in Atmospheric Black Metal

Revisiting the early days of the second wave of black metal and exploring the early innovators of what would later be called the "Atmospheric" sub-genre. We journey far beyond Norway to find unique sounds decades ahead of their time, and primitive versions of some of the genres biggest names.

Drill & Bass

A bit of a change up from our usual Genre episodes. Rather than focus on one particular moment in a genre's history, we instead take a two fold approach, half exploration of Drill n Bass' English roots in the early 90s and half modern revivals. The original idea was that the modern stuff would be more experimental and varied in influence and would make it easier for us as our first two dip into an almost entirely instrumental and entirely electronic genre, but we both ended up surprised by the versatility and progressive elements that have been present from the beginning. The episode became less a compare contrast, and more a realization that this sub-class of drum and bass has been strange and unusual from the jump.

Happy Holidays!

Rushed to edit this so it would be out at a decent time and figured I might as well just upload it. A very different episode discussing literal centuries of Christmas music. This was way more fun than I was expecting. 29/11/2021

When we think of Gothic Metal we often think of the early hybridization of death and doom or the drearier side of hyper produced Symphonic Metal, but throughout the early to mid 90's there was another side to the burgeoning goth metal scene. One filled with even stranger genre blends, bold risk taking and a shockingly modern approach to extreme metal lyricism. As the genre became more and more codified and gained more mainstream appeal these early innovations were mostly forgotten. We take a look back at these unremembered projects of yesteryear and attempt to reestablish the Kvlt credibility of a sub-genre that is laughed at by some, and completely disregarded by many others.

SPACE ROCK: THE LEAN YEARS

In the 50s and 60s man's imminent presence among the stars inspired bandleaders and lounge acts to create space age pop.

In the seventies the pop sci-fi and New Age boom brought us the golden age of space rock and the birth of space ambient

As the 90's approached alternative rock and jam bands began to to borrow elements from space rock's 70's peak and the adjacent neo-psych movement to redefine it for a new era.

So what the hell happened in the 80's?

Episode 0

I’m caught up on editing so I was finally able to go back and edit our demo/audio test episode from the middle of last year. A little different format wise than what the show ended up being but hopefully it’s enjoyable despite the rawness of the audio and the (mostly) depressing subject matter.

New Episode

A look back at the extremely influential but too often ignored Italio Disco movement. Despite the name this scene took influence not only from Disco but from funk, space rock, early electronica, AOR and more. It would influence many later European dance musicians and it’s keyboard soaked legacy can still be heard in many modern retro-synth revival projects.

New to the Feed

A few months back we recorded an episode about rock operas. I accidentally recorded my audio with my laptop mic and it sounded like complete s**t. I’ve been trying to save it ever since. It still sounds pretty bad and we lost probably 45 minutes of content due to incomprehensible audio but at least it gave me an excuse to clumsily force a Thomas Ligotti reference into the episode title. Hope it’s at least tolerable.
