Synopsis: A young first-generation American must learn to stand up for herself and her writing when a successful author pressures her to exploit her home country’s trauma in order to reach success at a writer’s workshop.
Character Bios:
Safija Azzam [FEMALE] [AGE: 18-25]
Safija is a passionate writer who yearns to become successful. Because she’s timid, she expresses herself through her fantasy stories that she writes for kids. To her, success is about making kids excited about reading, not fame and fortune.
Ellie [WHITE] [FEMALE] [18-25]
Ellie is a writer chosen to be at Monroe’s workshop just like Safija. Ellie is bold and daring, enjoys life and everything that comes along with it. She’s basically the opposite of Safija. Ellie and Safija become close friends.
Richard Monroe [WHITE] [MALE] [AGE: 45–60]
Richard is a famous and successful writer who has published over 15 novels. He is harsh and destructive with the young members of the workshop. He has his hopes set on Safija because he believes her ethnicity gives her an edge the others don’t have.
Yusuf Azzam [MALE] [AGE: 40-60]
Safija’s father. He is extremely supportive of his daughter and wants nothing more than to see her happy.
Fatima Azzam [FEMALE] [AGE: 40-60]
Safija’s mother. She is also extremely supportive, but she is a bit more worried for Safija than Yusuf is
because she knows how easily words affect Safija negatively. She is more timid, more like her daughter.
Matt [MALE] [AGE 18-25]
Matt is a member of the workshop. He is lively and has a free spirit.
Melanie [FEMALE] [AGE 18-25]
Melanie is a member of the workshop. She is snobby and arrogant, and she looks down upon Safija.
Amina [FEMALE] [AGE 8-15]
Amina is a young fan of Safija’s fantasy story. She comes to visit Safija at the workshop’s literary event with her friends. She is in awe of Safija and is happy to see a character like her set in a fantasy story rather than a war story.
