Hello stranger, welcome to my personal site. I help build digital products that tell engaging stories and help businesses increase traffic and conversions online. On this site, you can learn about my background, current projects, and future goals, hopefully, we share some in common. Make yourself at...
Ciudad de México - Torre Latinoamericana
Mexico has quickly become the number one destination for Americans looking for a quick trip overseas, and you corroborate that by checking out the change in volume over the past couple of years for keywords like "travel Mexico", "Mexico flights", "Mexico vacation" etc.
If you go walk around popular neighborhoods like Condesa, Roma, and Polanco you will find in some places more people speaking in English than in Spanish.
The number one reason for this is the ease of travel inside and outside of the country compared to others.
As long as you take a Covid test 3 days prior to returning to the US you are pretty much good to go.
Auto Tracking - Hyperlapse
This fancy-looking shot at Mexico City's Zocalo was a lot easier to pull off than it looks.
DJI's OSMO 4 allows you to get smooth stable footage but among many features it also lets you track specific subjects with the touch of a button.
You can use this feature to keep the camera following a static item as you move like in the case of this video but you can also track moving items.
In this video, all I did was go to the east end of the Zocalo, hit auto-track pointing to the center of the church, and began walking to the west end as the Gimble adjusted seamlessly while walking.
Lots of fun with this Gimble, absolutely worth it for anyone trying to create smooth footage.

While in Mexico City, we made reservations to go to one of Luis Barragan’s houses, a very famous modern Mexican architect. While the search term Luis Barragan gets barely 1K searches per month in the US, in Mexico the search term jumps to almost 15K searches per month. This might be for a number of reasons but it caught my attention that you can find widely different volumes for certain keywords depending on where you are located.
The top 3 results for each website are Luis’s Wikipedia page, then http://www.casaluisbarragan.org/and lastly https://www.barragan-foundation.org. After doing some additional research I noticed something that did not make any sense, casaluisbarragan.org was getting significantly less traffic than barragan-foundation.org, ten times less traffic to be exact yet casaluis-barragan.org was the second result. When you add to this that barragan-foundation is missing a secure connection via https this only makes the mystery more interesting.
The reason this happens is because Google ranks search results based on domain authority and not traffic. The higher the authority of a domain, regardless of its traffic the better the chance to show up at the top of search engines.
Tulum Extended - Every major social media platform has a pretty impressive copyright claim algorithm that flags your video and mutes it if it's using some song that somebody else owns. For my last Tulum video, I was using a pretty famous song by Jai Wold called "Indian Summer" and the video got muted. I also lost the ability to promote the video using Facebook Ads so the only people that get to interact with it are people following me. Here's a second attempt using Royalty-Free Music, I added a couple of extra edits for fun and I feel the result was much better.
Frida Kahlo and Bounce Rates
The "Frida Kahlo" search term gets an estimated 300K searches per month, with the top 3 results on google being the fridakahlo.org website, her Wikipedia page, and biography.com profiles.
The fridakahlo.org site is particularly interesting to me because it gets around 25% of the total traffic (60K unique visitors per month) but its bounce rates are around 75%, meaning that the site homepage is failing at keeping visitors interested and exploring beyond the homepage.
Bounce rates are calculated by dividing the total number of one-page visits by the total number of entries to a website. If the homepage of a website receives 100 visitors over the course of a month, and 50 of those visitors leave the site after viewing the homepage the bounce rate is 50%.
The reason this is important is that if you don't generate interest in your visitors as soon as they enter your website they will not explore what you have to offer in more detail.
This site, in particular, is missing a clear structure, it's clearly outdated and their sitemap is overwhelming. There is so much room for improvement, I'm literally reaching out to them to see if they would be interested in a pro-bono redesign.
You can have all of the traffic in the world, but without a great User Experience and a clear Content Structure, you'll leave your visitors confused and uninterested in your offer.

Pujol - Netflix, Traffic, and Conversions
Netflix receives an estimated 400 million visitors per month to its streaming platform. Needless to say their influence in culture and business nowadays is simply incalculable.
In 2016 the second season of Chef's table came out and on episode 4 they introduced Enrique Olivares, a well-known up-and-coming Mexican chef, and its signature restaurant Pujol.
In late 2015 the website pujol.com.mx was receiving an estimated 400 unique visits per month. After the documentary aired this number rose all the way to 25K unique visits per month or 62 times its previous traffic, reaching a high of 40K in 2019.
The average conversion rate for a service-based website like pujol.com.mx can be anywhere from 1-3%. The current price of a 7-course meal at Pujol is around 170$ USD. This means that at 25K visitors per month or 300K annually, Netflix's 1-hour episode increased Pujol's online annual conversions by (300K* 0.02 * 170$ = 1,200,000$) per restaurant.
I obviously can't take any credit away from Enrique, he is an incredible chef and he had built an incredible reputation before Chef's Table even existed. But this single 1-hour piece of content multiplied its online presence well beyond what he could have ever dreamed of.
