There’s A LOT going on right now. It’s complex and emotional to really process it all. This is what Mitch and I feel, though. And we will continue engage both personally and in our business with this very important part of all of our lives. A lyrical, meditative study of life in Cuba; not the commercialized, hyper-vivid pastel infused Cuba that the tourism board would sell you, but a much grittier, much more honest Cuba, that slipped through the cracks of Fidel Castro’s dreams. Hubert chose to shoot the film himself, forging close relationships with his subjects. This sometimes lends to an ‘home movies’ vibe, but his subjects are so compelling, I felt thankful for that closeness. Modern documentaries sometimes have a cold, detached method; they often have a sheen of beauty, with well-framed cinematography casting their subjects almost as heroes in paintings, but leaving little of the soul. Hubert’s approach feels much more raw, and, in effect, much more alive. There are several beautiful moments; most revolve around a pair of siblings who spend their days exploring a decaying Havana. There may not be the pristine pastels we were promised, but these thoughtful, curious, wonderful children provide all the color Cuba could need.
