Severe Weather 101
Join us on Facebook Live on Thursday, April 11 at 7pm for a class about severe weather taught by MMWV forecasters! We'll be covering topics like how severe weather forms, how meteorologists forecast for severe weather events, and what you can do to protect yourself during severe weather. We'll also have time for some Q&A at the end of class. We hope to see you there!
It is never too early to prepare for a blizzard! Here is what you need to stay safe if you encounter one.

RETURN OF WILDFIRE SMOKE:
Canadian wildfire smoke is likely to return to parts of the area, mainly further north and west tomorrow (Saturday). By Sunday, the potential is there for the smoke to cover just about all of lower Michigan again.
Smoke forecasts do not officially go beyond 24 to 48 hours given how new they are. Prior to this year, we have never had to deal with poor air quality from smoke in recorded history.
Will be monitoring this smoke potential closely throughout the weekend.

A dust devil was spotted near the Grand Rapids airport earlier today.
An interesting indicator of how dry it has become with no rain over the last 16 days.

A wildfire is ongoing near Grayling, MI. This is just north of Houghton Lake and south of Gaylord. The radar is detecting the smoke as it moves toward the southwest. Some areas are under evacuation this evening while crews work on fire suppression.

The Visible Satellite Loop today shows a nice large counter-clockwise circulation right over top of the Great Lakes. This is the upper-level low spinning over the top of us. Although, temperatures are above freezing at the ground, if you go 3,000 to 5,000 feet up into the sky, you'll find temperatures in the teens. This supports snow falling from the sky, but melting rather quickly on contact due to ground temperatures in the 50s.
There are even tiny increments where the sun pokes out for seconds at a time, which creates just enough instability to add a little bit of a convective nature to some of these snow showers.

6:40pm Radar:
There were a few lighting strikes, mainly in Ingham and Jackson counties over the last couple of hours. Most areas have seen light to briefly moderate showers. They are moving very slowly and beginning to weaken as a result. The later we get into the evening the fewer and fewer the showers will become. Most of the night ahead will be dry and warm with lows in the mid-50s to lower-60s.

Lake Effect Snow Tonight & Saturday
Periodic travel slowdowns tonight and Saturday:
Lake effect snow will develop this evening and end Saturday night. The snow will be most intense during the daylight hours of Saturday due to peak daytime heating. The nature of this snow means that there will be times that the sun is peaking out or skies are just cloudy, while other times, moderate snow will be coming down. Rapidly changing weather conditions back and forth throughout the day are expected. Slick roads are likely with temperatures 25° to 29° at the warmest Saturday afternoon and visiblities could drop to less than a 1/4 mile at times underneath a heavy snow band.
