7-Day Forecast –Friday, July 19th, 2024 -- 6PM

Good evening! A bounce back to the 80s is expected as much of Michigan has been in the 70s the past few days. Cloud cover for tomorrow is expected to increase as the day progresses with high temperatures around 82 degrees. A very weak cold front will move through in the early morning hours on Sunday bringing only a wind direction change and a small chance for scattered showers throughout the afternoon. Mostly cloudy conditions for Monday with highs in the mid-80s. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday all feature chances for rain showers to develop with multiple low-pressure systems moving through the region. As of now, there is a decent signal for the chance of widespread precipitation on Wednesday and Thursday, but of course, there is still time for things to change so we will keep an eye on it. Finally, for Friday, high pressure moves back into the region, bringing sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s.

16/07/2024

The National Weather Service has officially designated yesterday's severe storm event across Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and Indiana as a derecho. A derecho is a squall line of severe storms that have to meet the following criteria: the line of storms must travel for over 400 miles, be 60 miles wide, while simultaneously having wind gusts of at least 75 mph periodically reported along the line. However, derechos often have higher winds present, some as high as 100 mph. Yesterday's storm system did indeed meet all of the criteria for a derecho.

With last night's set of storms, the highest measured wind gust was found in Holy Cross, IA, at 97 mph. However, all along the derecho, wind gusts of 70+ mph were measured and/or estimated using radar. The winds weren't the only threat though, as some of these storms began to rotate along the line and produce a few tornadoes. So far, the SPC (map shown with tornado reports in red) has recorded 4 tornado reports from Iowa and areas in Illinois including the Chicago region.

Lastly, this derecho also produces prolific amounts of rainfall, with some areas receiving over 6 inches of rain. Other areas, while not receiving quite that high of rainfall, still saw 2+ inches of rain over the span of just an hour or two.

Tonight & Wednesday – July 16th and 17th, 2024 - 3 PM

Good afternoon, Mid-Michigan!

After a very active recent period of weather for some in lower Michigan, more tranquil weather is expected to settle in. Partly cloudy skies are expected overnight tonight with low temperatures cooling off into the low 60s, which is around average for this time of year. Winds will be out of the NW at 5-10 mph.

Wednesday looks to be a beautiful day weather-wise, as temperatures are expected to be relatively moderate, reaching the high 70s to around 80 degrees. Humidity will also be substantially lower, so it won’t feel as muggy outside. Mostly sunny skies are anticipated, with the slight chance for a pop-up shower or two also possible. Winds will be out of the NW at 5-10 mph with wind gusts as high as 20 mph possible at times.

7-Day Forecast –Friday, July 12th, 2024 -- 6 PM

Good evening! A warmup to the upper 80s and low 90s is expected for Mid-Michigan starting tomorrow and continuing into early next week. Starting with Saturday, patchy fog could develop early tomorrow morning which could slow down any early morning travel. After the fog clears out, mostly sunny skies are expected with a high of 88 degrees. With the warm temperatures continuing through Tuesday, the chance for thunderstorm development increases. Sunday still has some uncertainty in how many rounds of storms do we get, the timing of the storms, and the overall strength of the storms, but the idea for thunderstorms is there. There is a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms for Monday and Tuesday with highs in the mid to upper 80's. After a cold front moves through on Tuesday, a high-pressure system moves into the region bringing cooler temperatures in the 70s and fair sky conditions for Thursday and Friday.

Have a great week!
