Most of you, it may be assumed, are unaware of the current proposal of our 'illustrious' Arts commons (common to whom?). I leave you with my response to this further example of managerial class/bourgeois/polite society cronyism. A type of corporate rapacity that undermines every Calgarian's civic rights to free access of spaces deemed open by the 'Sycophants of City Hall'. The current proposal, insomuch as I am aware, will see Canada Olympic Plaza, you know, that place where free assembly, the free enjoyment of music and art, a true 'Common' bastion for sharing thoughts and ideas, where kids can splash and revel on a glorious sunny day, take over the greatest square footage of that hallowed space for none other than self-interest and capital gain. Now, you may say. 'who cares. It's going to bring tourism dollars and add more banal and non-thought-provoking architecture to a city holistically lacking in any meaningful culture (remember, culture is created by the masses, entertainment by the few... sic oligarchy). Should this be your view then, allow me this minor admonishment. Please don't let me hear or read any of your posts about American politics, or the overwhelming evils of the bad orange man. If you have no desire to fix what is in your own back yard then, in my estimation, you do not deserve any better than the Canadian equivalent of what you despise in an others yard. Time to move, time to groove and for the love of a god, stop signaling virtue and actually get some!
My Response:
Think about it. In theory, Olympic Plaza is a free, outdoor space dedicated for the civic population. Arts commons (common to whom?) is a gentrified, antiseptic monument to the managerial class. It provides very little value to the civic artist and instead, sells it commodified entertainment to the bourgeois class or, simpler said, to those that can afford it. Once again, we arrive at the same overarching question. Whether to put into the hands of public/private partnership, what otherwise belongs by nature and right, to the people alone. We keep acknowledging and speaking to problems and at every turn, continue applying the same ineffective at best and rapacious at worst, metric. How about, other than tourism dollars and some misplaced sense of pride (sic narcissism), we, the actual people say such an uncivilized, proletariat phrase like ‘f**k you’! How about you will not, EVER, build over what actually is common to all Calgarians. In addition, if you do not engage, to a far greater extent, the Artistic class in this city and provide opportunities to civic Artists, all funding will cease, you will fail and the present population will instead, fashion differently a thing that is representative for the people and by their hand. It is quite a story we have told ourselves. One of subservience, warped ideology and the selling of man’s natural rights for a mess of pottage or, maybe, just maybe, a seat at the table. Very, very sad. If all I have written strikes you as unimaginable, romantic or absurd then, you are firstly and in all pragmatic terms, whom the cinematic spectacle, The Matrix, was designed for. Secondly, you have no desire for creative thought or expression. And third the future, should it come to fruition, will remember you none. It is time to start thinking and constructing for the sake of others. To be creative in thought, in governance, in the not-so-grand politic and the practical wellbeing of all men and women. Now, that’s a conversation worth having!
