Winter Travel Preparedness Tips ❄️🚗

🔹 BEFORE THE STORM: ✔️ Get a vehicle tune-up: Check tires, fluids, wipers & fill your gas tank. ✔️ Pack an emergency kit: Water, snacks, blankets, flashlight, jumper cables, ice scraper, shovel, warm clothing, phone charger & more. ✔️ Stay updated on the forecast with local meteorologists, including
✔️ Be prepared for power outages. (Remember, only run a gas generator outdoors away from windows and vents)!

🔹 DURING THE STORM: ⚠️ Avoid travel unless necessary. 📍 Inform someone of your route if you must drive. 🚨 If stranded, stay in your vehicle, call for help & run the engine periodically for warmth (keep the exhaust pipe area clear to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning). 🛑 Brake & accelerate slowly—avoid sudden stops. ⏳ Increase following distance & avoid cruise control. ⚠️ Watch for black ice, especially on bridges.

🔹 AFTER THE STORM: 🕓 Wait for road crews to clear & treat roads. ❄️ Remove all snow/ice from your vehicle before driving.
‼️ Don’t over exert yourself when shoveling. Ask for help.  🚗 Wash your car to prevent rust from road salt.

✨ Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is Here! ✨

As someone who’s passionate about looking at the sky, Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (C/2023 A3) is visible at times, and it’s putting on quite a show! 🌠

📷 This evening, I saw the comet well-positioned in the sky, midway between Venus and the bright star, Arcturus.

⏰ Now is your chance to witness this stunning comet as it moves across the evening sky.

🔭 Viewing Times:
-About 45 minutes after sunset
-Now until October 26th (but dimming as each day progresses)
-Best viewing Oct 14th & 15th

🔭 Where to Look: Look toward the western sky, low near the horizon. Each evening, you’ll notice the comet will rise a little higher, but appear slightly less dim as it continues its journey.

🕰️ How long will it be visible each night?
On October 15th, the comet will be visible until it sets about 1 hr 20 minutes later. By October 26th, it won’t set for about 4+ hours, however by this date it will be very dim and will only look like a faint star.

💫 Nearby Objects: To help locate the comet, start by finding Venus, one of the brightest objects in the evening sky.

☄️ A comet is a celestial traveler made of ice, dust, and rock, and as it nears the Sun, the heat causes it to release gas and dust, forming a beautiful glowing tail.

Make sure to catch this once-in-a-lifetime sight and share it with your friends and family! The skies are full of wonder, and watching a comet like this reminds us of the vast beauty of the universe. 🌌✨ . .

🌌✨ Hey everyone! Thursday night is a great night to catch the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights! 🌟

I - - even saw them in southeastern Virginia, which doesn’t happen often!

If you’re in a dark spot away from city lights, look to the north. You might see some amazing colors dancing across the sky.

It’s a natural light show you won’t want to miss! Grab your friends, bundle up, and enjoy the magic!

🎙️ FLORIDA RESIDENTS: Better to be safe than sorry. Your life matters. Your family members’ lives matter. Your pets’ lives matter.

If you haven’t been ordered to evacuate and don’t know if you should stay or go…listen to your gut.

If continues on this forecast path, you may never have seen a storm like this. ⚠️

After the hurricane, many in FL will be without power for days, weeks, if not longer… 💡

Prepare to be your own first responder. ⛑️ Rescue teams may not be able to get to you for quite some time. Their lives matter too. ❤️‍🩹

You don’t want to say after the storm, “I wish I would have ________.”

Your life matters. Property and belongings can be replaced. People and pets cannot.

Please stay safe. As meteorologists, it is our duty to interpret and provide you with the best information available to help keep you and your loved ones safe. 🙏🏻❤️‍🩹 . .

Remember: during and after the storm, you may be your own first responder. Emergency help may be delayed or unable to reach you for hours, days or even longer. ❤️‍🩹

I, CEO , had pre-scheduled interviews to discuss the importance of backup power during emergencies, and as I scroll through social media, my heart aches for those affected by . 💔

Salt can conduct electricity. ‼️

This is a growing problem in disasters and some people are losing their homes from their sparking fires in their flooded garages. 🌊

⚠️ Urgent Alert: Even if you are outside Hurricane Helene’s forecast cone, the potential for devastating impacts remains.

📍As of Thursday evening, Helene is affecting almost all of Florida!

Helene is a dangerous major hurricane.

Even in southwest Florida in places like Ft. Myers Beach, STORM SURGE (see forecast storm surge - image 2) is making roads impassable and necessitating water rescues. The northeast quadrant of the storm (which is Florida on Thursday night) experiences the most severe effects, with high winds pushing significant ocean water inland. 🌊

Historically, storm surge has been the leading cause of fatalities during tropical cyclones. I sincerely hope everyone along the coast heeded evacuation orders. Prayers go out to everyone in FL - especially those bracing for landfall in the Big Bend region. 🙏🏻

The imminent danger is heightened by the fact that some of the worst impacts may occur overnight. Please keep your NOAA weather radio on alert mode to ensure you receive any weather alerts such as tornado or flash flood warnings. 📻 Tornadoes most commonly occur in the outer bands.

Please prioritize your safety; your life, your family’s lives and the lives of your pets are invaluable. ❤️‍🩹 . .
