Russian rocket on Tuesday successfully launched an Iranian satellite into orbit.

The Soyuz rocket lifted off as scheduled at 8:52 a.m. Moscow time (0552 GMT) Tuesday from the Russia-leased Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan.

About nine minutes after the launch, it placed the Iranian satellite called Khayyam into orbit. It's named after Omar Khayyam, a Persian scientist who lived in the 11th and 12th centuries.

Iran has said the satellite fitted with high-resolution camera will be used for environmental monitoring and will remain fully under its control.

Tehran said no other country will have access to information it gathers and it would be used for civilian purposes only, but there have been allegations that Russia may use it for surveillance of Ukraine amid its military action there.

If it operates successfully, the satellite would give Iran the ability to monitor its archenemy Israel and other countries in the Middle East.

Foreign Minister Joseph Wu claimed on August 9 that Beijing was encircling the island with air and sea manoeuvres to get ready for an invasion and alter the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific.

"China has used the drills and its military playbook to prepare for the invasion of Taiwan," Joseph Wu told a press conference in Taipei. "China's real intention is to alter the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and entire region."

The threat from China to Taiwan is "more serious than ever," but the island will resolutely defend its independence and democracy, Wu said in an interview with CNN on August 8. Wu's statement came as China claimed to have kept up military exercises surrounding the independent island, following a four-day show of force in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taipei last week.

Instagram is tweaking a feature to show ‘ultra-tall’ photos, similar to its full-screen reels display. CEO Adam Mosseri earlier said Instagram will become more video-focused but will continue to support photos. The platform recently expanded its NFT support to 100 countries.

According to The Verge, Mosseri confirmed testing ultra-tall 9:16 photos in a week or two. At present, the platform supports only a 4:5 ratio when displaying vertical mages. “You can have tall videos, but you cannot have tall photos on Instagram. So we thought maybe we should make sure that we treat both equally,” Mosseri said.

The platform faced criticism when it tested the full-screen experience of its feed display. The platform reportedly intends to showcase the ultra-tall photo experience without mandating it across the board. Instagram feed had overlay gradients at the bottom of posts for readability. In an interview last week, Mosseri said, “I think that we need to take a big step back, regroup, and figure out how we want to move forward.” The company will reduce the number of recommendations displayed to users

Pakistan bans import of non-essential luxury items to stabilise economy
The Pakistani government has imposed a complete ban on the import of more than three dozen non-essential luxury items as part of an emergency economic plan to stabilise the national economy.

The Pakistani government has imposed a complete ban on the import of more than three dozen non-essential luxury items as part of an emergency economic plan to stabilise the national economy.

On Thursday, Information and Broadcasting Minister, Maryam Aurangzeb said, "There is an emergency situation and Pakistanis will have to make sacrifices under the economic plan. This will have a quick impact on the country's foreign reserves."

Pakistan will have to reduce its dependency on imports to put the country on the path of economic stability and progress, she said, adding that the government has been working to introduce an export-oriented policy, which will benefit local industry and producers, and generate employment, Xinhua news agency reported.

The development came after the Pakistani rupee continued to sink over the past few weeks, hitting a historic low value of 200 against the US dollar in the inter-bank market on Thursday, depreciating 0.81 per cent as compared to that on Wednesday.

The decline of the Pakistani rupee is attributed to the rising import bill, growing current account deficit and depleting foreign exchange reserves, according to economic experts.

Sri Lanka's prime minister has warned of a food shortage as the island nation battles a devastating economic crisis and vowed the government will buy enough fertiliser for the next planting season to boost harvests.

A decision in April last year by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to ban all chemical fertilisers drastically cut crop yields and although the government has reversed the ban, no substantial imports have yet taken place.
"While there may not be time to obtain fertiliser for this Yala (May-August) season, steps are being taken to ensure adequate stocks for the Maha (September-March) season," Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said in a message on Twitter late on Thursday.

According to forex dealers, the exchange rate remained under pressure as the US dollar continued its upward spiral against the local currency.

The Pakistani rupee slumped to an all-time low against the US dollar on Tuesday in the interbank market.

The value of the greenback surged by 82 paisa in early trade and currently trading at rupees 188.35 in the interbank market, hitting an all-time high.

According to forex dealers, the exchange rate remained under pressure as the US dollar continued its upward spiral against the local currency.

The forex dealers have further shared that the greenback is being sold above rupees 189 in the open market.

The US dollar on the other day closed at rupees 187.53 in the interbank market, reported ARY News.

According to experts, the surging dollar has shattered the confidence of the rupee-based economy and its stakeholders.

The gloomy macros will continue to put pressure on the local unit, they said.

Meanwhile, the State Bank of Pakistan's (SBP) foreign exchange reserves fell by USD 328 million to USD 10.558 billion during the week that ended on April 23, data released by the central bank showed, reported ARY News.

11/05/2022

Over 800 WhiteHat Jr employees have resigned from the edtech start-up in the last two months after being asked to work from office, according to an Inc42 exclusive report.

WhiteHat Jr, a platform to learn coding which was acquired by BYJU’S, asked its employees to return to office within a month’s time. The policy to end work from home was announced in a company-wide email on March 18 which asked remote employees to return to office by April 18.

Inc42 has learnt that around 800 employees resigned from the start-up, unwilling to return to office. The resignations came from full-time employees of the sales, coding, and math teams. More employees are expected to put down their papers in the coming months.

One of the employees who resigned told Inc42 that a month’s time was not enough for relocation. “Some have kids, some have aged and sick parents, while others have other responsibilities. It is not right to call back employees in such a short period of time,” the former WhiteHat Jr employee said.

The employee further put the return to office policy down to cost-cutting measures. “The company was clearly running in losses. This was a cost-cutting exercise to reduce its expenses without ruining their name in the market,” they said.

Another employee said salaries also factored in the decision to not return to office. At the time of hiring, employees were told about their job location – WhiteHat Jr has offices in Gurugram, Mumbai and Bengaluru. However, after working from home for two years, employees believed that their salaries should be revised to reflect the cost of living in expensive cities.
