This or we’ve been witnessing in Ottawa is classic right wing “populism.” Designed to look pro-worker and grassroots, it is anything but. On this episode of Trickle-Down Socialism, I spoke to a Canadian who gave a first row account of the clown show buffoonery. Link in bio - or find us wherever you get your podcasts

How many times have you heard someone say: “Defund the police is about reallocating resources. No one is in favor of fully abolishing the police?”

Well, some people are working towards full abolition. The belief is the institution, founded on catching slaves and busting unions, is rotten to the core. Reform isn’t the right solution when an organization is too far gone.

Our guest on this episode, rapper and activist Awkword, has been working on the Ten Demands for Justice, the Road to Abolition, for years. Check out the interview, it is definitely thought-provoking.

Newest Episode is one of the best we’ve done to date. We talked to Kurt Andersen, a prolific journalist, author, and NPR host, about his new book, Evil Geniuses, about coordinated efforts to achieve conservative economical and political changes in the United States from the 1970s to 2020, and discusses how the resulting unfettered laissez-faire approach to capitalism has resulted in an extreme level of economic inequality.
The conversation focuses on where we can go from here. Check it out wherever you get your podcasts or use this link

In this episode, we talk to Dr Ben Burgis, a Philosophy Professor, Jacobin writer, and author of 2 influential books, one of which featured heavily in the interview. Dr Burgis is focused on ways to build the Left and build unity and solidarity within a broader Left movement and he argues that the exclusionary and shaming sentiments attached to the idea of “cancelling” someone are not only off-putting to folks who are interested in joining the Left, but they’re actually antithetical to Leftism. He points to Sen Sanders and his crumpled list of policy initiatives for his conversation with Dowd of the NYTimes as exactly the type of disciplined communication focused on tangible improvements to the standard of living for the working class that the Left should have.

Had the privilege to interview William Compton, teacher and candidate for Congress in Kentucky. Compton is a phenomenal teacher and is openly gay - his presence on the campaign trail could save the lives of the people he meets if they see a public figure who is open about his sexuality. Imagine growing up gay in Kentucky. Imagine the stigma you’d feel if all the people you know, all of them “Christians,” tell you God hates gay people. Our guest on this episode, William Compton, grew up in just this environment. He’s a music teacher in public school now and he’s running for Congress in Kentucky’s 2nd district. We talked about his experience working in fast food to pay for college and grad school and how fast food workers deserve a union and a living wage. We talked about what single-payer healthcare would do for the people of his district. Student debt cancellation came up, and Compton supports wiping that debt away so young professionals can start participating in the economy and building wealth.

Exciting news - I’ve booked an interview with author and former NPR host, Kurt Andersen. I found him when I was reading his most recent work, “Evil Geniuses,” an absolutely blistering piece of reporting on how corporate forces have rigged the game and created the levels of inequality we now have in our society. A recent study shows inequality has now reached levels not seen since the height of the Gilded Age.
His book tracks with the tagline of the TDS Podcast: Socialism for the rich, brutal capitalism for everyone else (this is a paraphrase of both the show tagline and MLK’s well-worded condemnation of the political and economic systems in the US.)

I’ll be interviewing Mr Andersen late next week, but in the meantime, check out our episode on Tenant unions, and stay tuned for my conversation with William Compton - openly gay music teacher from Bowling Green Kentucky who is running for Congress. Episode 10 of Season 2 is designed to explain the process of organizing tenant unions, describe the benefits of such unions, and hear from an organizer who is doing this important work. Have a listen by searching us up wherever you get your podcasts, or check out the links in the comments. Most tenants don’t have lawyers representing them in eviction proceedings because evictions are a civil matter. I spoke to Dan Pecora, host of the Snowflake Sports podcast and member of Central CT DSA, who worked with his fellow DSA members to lobby state legislators to guarantee a Right to Counsel in eviction proceedings in CT. Episode 9 of Season 3 hits on issues that are affecting millions of people in the West:
- Climate change creating enormous drought zones that keep getting hotter and drier
- Farm Workers Rights, recently denied by the Supreme Court in a recent decision that allows fruit farms to block unions. We discussed how Immigration reform could put a stop to exploitation of labor.

Our latest episode gets in the weeds a bit on what the Constitution actually says about democracy, redistricting, apportionment, the census and gerrymandering. Hint: the only people who could vote for a large portion of our history as a nation were white, Christian men who owned land. The push for a more representative democracy is a far more recent phenomenon in the US than most history books lead you to believe. Episode features brilliant analysis of the constitution and the redistricting process by author of the Margin of Error blog, Robb Smith.

In Suffolk County, MA, we are lucky to have one of the most progressive and forward-thinking District Attorneys in the country. DA Rachael Rollins ran on a platform of diversion and declination for a list of 15 misdemeanors - and she stuck to her word when she won her race with 80% of the vote. She has chosen to decriminalize behaviors that are the result of homelessness, mental illness, and addiction — and a recent independent study that was conducted using the data from her office showed that her approach works: for the defendants and for society. I was lucky enough to interview DA Rollins for the most recent episode of our podcast: Trickle-Down Socialism

Democratic Socialists are on the rise across the country. Why? Because they have a platform that meets the moment and aims to fix, rather than band-aid over, the disparities laid bare by the pandemic. Centrist Democrats can either learn to work with DemSocs or they can quit, like these folks chose to do in Nevada.

The battle between insurgent progressives in Nevada and the Harry Reid machine began building in 2016.

Episode 3 of this season features an interview with award winning journalist Ross Barkan on the state of the Left and what the Left can reasonably hope to accomplish with Biden in office. Barkan provides analysis on issues plaguing the Democratic Party like the decades long flight of non-college educated blue collar workers (a pattern affecting center-left partes across the world.) Barkan’s tireless work as a journalist and his refusal to give Democrats a pass means his analysis is well-informed and his opinions are unique. Patrick, Dan

Our most recent episode focuses on the fight for Medicare for All.
A universal, single-payer healthcare system is the only way to achieve the efficiency, effectiveness, and fair system that we need and deserve. If the pandemic has made one thing crystal clear, it’s that we can no longer keep a system that is largely based on employers providing healthcare for employees at-will. Listen to our guest explain the many reasons why we need the change...

Looking to hear from a young black progressive with great ideas on where our country should go? Season 3 starts with our interview with Mayor Colin Byrd, the youngest black mayor in the country, who is running for US Congress in 2022. He’s got a lot of fresh ideas and I think you’ll enjoy the interview.
