I get to talk to later today about BRAZIL & WHEN EVIL LURKS /CUANDO ACECHA LA MALDAD 🇦🇷, two films, almost 40 years apart, which both speak to the evil of bureaucracy. This has been the conversation I've looked forward to the most this year! I didn't plan to watch all of WHEN EVIL LURKS again, but it is a solid flick that clips along once it gets started and is beautifully shot.
BRAZIL is one of the films that made me. I saw it at just the right time, at age 15/16 right after I had studied the novel 1984 IN 1984. Along with TIME BANDITS, THE FISHER KING, and 12 MONKEYS, BRAZIL is one of my all-time favorite movies and has had the surprising effect of actually making me feel nostalgic for my childhood--no easy feat, let me tell you!!!
I hope Mac doesn't hate it, but we'll see if it can transcend the decades. I'm looking forward to sharing this conversation with Y'all WoHos.--Mom

Trying so hard not to write a book for the summary as I'm rewatching maybe the most formative movie of my teenhood, BRAZIL. I can't wait to get 's takes on this one. It will be paired with Demian Rugna's modern classic, WHEN EVIL LURKS 🇦🇷 for our Grim AF show! Oh, you're welcome!

So, Friends, as some of you may know, I have been creating art as a hobby off and on since 2009 or so. This year, I received an art grant from the The Arts Council of Greater Greensboro. My project is to turn my hobby into a business and I hope to be up and running by October. I am looking into various online marketplaces including Etsy and others, but in the mean time, I am going to list available items here in the comments like the way they do it on the Buy Nothing page. I am looking for salvaged windows and wood, medium-large smooth rocks, ceramic and glass plates, junk/costume jewelry and buttons, and small plastic figures (like GI Joes) or other stuff you might otherwise throw away. What better film to herald Springtide than a glorious mishmash about toxic masculinity, grief, and the gender binary which is definitely a thing and is definitely the only thing there is?...oh, boy.

Coming up on Friday: Episode 130 of the podcast! and I had a delightful chat about mental health issues when we reviewed JACOB'S LADDER (1990) from the US & THE BABADOOK from Australia 🇦🇺!
Mac called the "twist" in JACOB'S LADDER, but I still got real nerdy with the religious symbolism of it all. We also discussed how very much it takes a village and how that one kid is such a perfect advertisement for birth control. Also, RIP Bugsy.

WoHos! Episode 129 is now live in all the podcast places. and I reviewed two films concerning loss of innocence: THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER and THE INNOCENTS.
Both films explore how truly frightening it is to be a child: powerless in the face of deception, gaslighting, abuse, and confusion. Neither film is perfect, but each has its eerie moments and wonderful performances.
