Carl Edwards never planned on returning to the NASCAR spotlight. He walked away at the peak of his career, seemingly at peace with his decision. But fate had a way of pulling him back in. When NASCAR surprised him with a place among its 75 Greatest Drivers, it was a sign that the sport hadn’t forgotten him. And now, after eight years of keeping his distance, Edwards finds himself standing among the legends in the Hall of Fame—something he never expected.

For someone who built a career on grit, precision, and an unmistakable backflip celebration, the abruptness of his retirement in 2017 still lingers as an unfinished chapter. He insists he has no regrets, but he admits, “I probably could have done it in a more gracious way.” That honesty, that openness about the weight of his departure, made his return even more powerful. When his wife urged him to check his phone after landing in Missouri, he had no idea he’d been voted in with 52% of the ballots. The news stunned him. “It shocked me,” he said. “I never imagined they would welcome me in this way.”

The irony is that Edwards’ career always felt like it had more to give. His 28 Cup Series wins, his Xfinity championship in 2007, and two heartbreaking runner-up finishes in the Cup Series felt like a resume that lacked one final line—the championship he was so close to securing in 2016. That season’s finale at Homestead still haunts NASCAR fans. Leading in the final laps, on the verge of clinching his first title, Edwards’ race came crashing down—literally—after a wreck with Joey Logano. Some believe that was the moment something in him changed, that the heartbreak was too much to bear. He never confirmed it, but the suddenness of his exit only fueled the speculation.

And yet, standing in the Hall of Fame, Edwards wasn’t thinking about what could have been. He was overwhelmed by what was. The acceptance, the love from a sport he thought might have resented his departure, left him emotional. “It’s the first time I really felt like I understood what the NASCAR family is,” he admitted. The way NASCAR embraced him at Darlington for the 75 Greatest Drivers celebration had already planted a seed, but this honor made it clear—he was always going to be a part of this sport’s history.

But could he ever be part of its present again? That’s the question lingering now. For years, Edwards has been content staying away, focusing on his family, his health, even getting into aviation and humanitarian work. But the whispers of a return keep getting louder. Kyle Larson playfully suggested Edwards should fill in for him during practice for the NASCAR All-Star Race, and Denny Hamlin has made it known that the door is always open. “Whenever you’re ready, just let me know,” Hamlin said. Edwards’ response? A mix of humor and intrigue. “It’s never a total no,” he admitted. “I like options.”

That’s the thing about Carl Edwards. He’s unpredictable. He left on his own terms, and if he ever does come back, it will be because something in him just can’t stay away anymore. Maybe it’s the way NASCAR has welcomed him back. Maybe it’s the itch to race again. Or maybe, just maybe, his story isn’t quite finished yet.

Changes at Birch Run Speedway! Congratulations!

As many of you know we have been going through substantial staffing changes over the last few months in an effort to improve the racing experience for our fans and especially our drivers who have made Birch Run Speedway successful for more than 75 years.

Most recently our track manager Dave Damon resigned to pursue other opportunities and as a result we have asked Charles Hamilton to step in and help us through the end of the 2024 race season.

Charles is a local business owner, graduate of Clio High School and has been actively involved this season here at Birch Run Speedway in many different capacities. I am confident he will represent us well and help us finish the season on a positive note.

Please help us welcome Charles to the Birch Run family as we look forward to an exciting Championship Night this Friday.
